A Great Big World – Say Something lyrics
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I am feeling so small
It was over my head

I know nothing at all

And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
And anywhere, I would've followed you

Say something, I'm giving up on you

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something

I believe this song is about two people who know each other and neither one of them has the courage to talk to the other. It reminds me of high school where people make eye contact and in that moment see an unlit candle in them but won't light it. It also is like the friend zone to get out you have to walk to the light and embrace it.

I think there's two different meanings here.

    1. Two people are in a relationship, whether a romantic one or a friendly one or whatever. They're trying to stick together but it's too late, it's too slow, there's nothing left. They want so badly to keep trying and going at it, but they're out of ways to make it better. Words don't work anymore, and the spark's just gone.

    2. Death, or illness. When someone you love is sinking away. You keep asking them to say something, to wake up, to stay. But as time goes on, their face is slowly taken from you and your memory. You forget how they smelled and how they felt. You forget their voice, and eventually you forget everything but their name. Your memories are just memories, and there's no more laughter, they cease to exist. The graffiti artist Banksy once said through one of his pieces, “I mean, they say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time.” That's the end, when nothing's left of the person except what you can dredge up by thinking really, really hard.

Two people are in a relationship and they love each other so badly but one day they argue and they go for weeks without talking to each other. So either of the two is not saying anything to either. So they will say: Say something iam giving up on you, you are the one I love but iam saying goodbye.

Simple. This is about unrequited love. He kept trying, and he would've followed her anywhere, but she wouldn't budge. She wouldn't love. He'll be the one if she wants him to. Yet he could never see how she would never love him. Therefore he feels so small, so weak, it's all over his head.

Say something. Say you want me. I'm sorry I couldn't get to you, couldn't make you love me. Couldn't wait any more. I swallow my pride and give up on the one I love. I'm giving up on you.

I don’t know exactly what the artists wanted the message to be... Whether they meant it to be a fading relationship or a relationship wanting to happen or something like that. I personally see it as “Please say something... I’m giving up on you.” In the sense that someone they love is on the verge of death. So, I first heard this song after my great grandmother had passed away from Pancreatic Cancer. When I actually listened to the lyrics, I thought of her and I won’t lie... I bawled my eyes out. To be honest, I think she wanted me to find that song. Why? I don’t really know, but I’m sure it will click someday.

They were once lovers, they separated without officially broken up. The lovers reconnection seems long distance. They both tried to physically meet again, and again, yet for some reason it has not happened. They both were stood up by each other. There's indecisiveness and fear of the unknown in both sides. There is also ego-to-ego battle going on. The last time he had a reason for not getting to her, though it was partly her fault. He regretted missing what could've been their last chance. Anywhere he would've followed her if he knew where she was. He comes to a point when he is willing to put aside his ego and swallow his pride. Means he can take rejection, disappointment, or humiliation from whatever she says to him. He just needs to know. He seems unsure if she's really given up on him. He wants to hear it from her because he's just about to settle down on a long term commitment to the other. He does not want to make "the big decision" out of the "hopeless" assumption. So he is giving their relationship one last chance by putting the ball in her court for her to make the move. He wants her to say something that could change his mind. She's the one that he loves and before he completely gives up on her wants to hear her last say.

A father and daughter. She's 19 years old and wants to live a life different than what mom and dad believes in. For years she keeps her secret. Finally she will tell her mom and dad her big secret. Why she feels the way she does. Will it tear the family apart. The dad's heart is breaking. Can he get to her in time. They want to understand and be supportive but only learning to crawl. The dad is willing to swallow his pride in hopes not to say goodbye.

All I can think of when hearing this is a girl is driving on the highway, speaking to her best friend and boyfriend on the phone. Her boyfriend had told her to meet him somewhere and was planning to propose, and the best friend was in on it. The thing was, the girl thought the boyfriend was going to break up with her because he'd been so distant planning the proposal, and the girl had turned to alcohol. Not enough to be visibly and audibly drunk, but enough to be slightly impaired, and talking on the phone wasn't helping. Of course, neither the best friend nor the boyfriend know this. When the girl crashes her car, the best friend and boyfriend don't know what's going on, and keep asking her to say something so they know she's okay. I imagine this as a duet between the best friend an boyfriend at the girl's funeral, going over the events and the fear. Essentially apologizing, because the boyfriend thinks it's his fault for being distant, and the best friend thinks she should've noticed the slight slur in the girl's words, the rumble of the car, and prevented anything from happening. I doubt this happened to the writer, but it makes me think of this.

Most of the time boy says their feelings to girl but she can't decide what to say. Just let him wait and wait. He just want to know whether there is hope or not. If, by chance she says they are just friends then boy doesn't endure the pain. He just don't know what to do. He just want to hear the words what he loves to hear form her side but she still doesn't express anything. Perhaps she is in the state of uncapabel to take a decision about here relationship or just does't want to change her relationship with good friend. But boy, now and then always expresses his inner love to her but she remains silence then with inner pain and agony boy each and every moment live with pain of love hurt. He starts to think about his one-sided love and want to be loved by her. For hear what he wants to hear for her side he just sings the song _Say something. Hoping she will say "I LOVE YOU"!

It was just like the video when Mom died and Dad was kind of sleeping with her in her hospital bed when suddenly called up in the middle of the night- that was all I could think about- the number 2 meaning with death is so true - I am sad for this person and the black guy that was playing the piano and looking up at the sky! My best to him too!
