Alice In Chains – Black Gives Way To Blue lyrics
I don't wanna feel no more
It's easier to keep falling
Imitations are pale
Emptiness all tomorrows
Haunted by your ghost

Lay down, black gives way to blue
Lay down, I'll remember you

Fading out by design
Consciously avoiding changes
Curtains drawn now it's done
Silencing all
Tommorows Forcing a goodbye

Lay down, black gives way to blue
Lay down, I'll remember you...

Beautiful tribute to Layne from Jerry. I wish he could have been helped. I feel like people gave up on him. I know he gave into the addiction but I just wish someone could have helped him. Such a great talent. He should have been able to live a full life. He should still be here singing with his band. Layne you will be missed FOREVER ♥️

I've always stated that cantrell is a genius. Except for the music, he's the only songwriter in this world who can be so accurate, deep and realistic that sometimes becomes a little raw and cynical. He always expresses the deepest, the darkest thoughts, the ones that hurt the most. I've found myself crying to this song several times. This is the beauty of music. And I'm really sad that layne is gone. May his and mike's souls rest in peace. Miss you, guys.

I would have loved to have watched them perform this song last Thursday (10/22) when I took in their show. Instead, the boys did an extended version of "Nutshell" that had an extended solo. After the song was finished, Jerry appeared in the red stage light and stated, "That was for Layne", which brought huge cheers from the crowd. R.I.P. Layne. Great show, great f*****g band. Alice in chains are back!

I do not know the true meaning of this song, it could be a tribute to layne I do not know. Tell me this why did the band let him go? I am sure there were obvious signs of drug addiction, he was a human being don't you think you could have done something?. Look what happened to mike star. I know that addiction is very hard to over come, and you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. But christ man he was a big part of your band. I guess I just do not understand why?

I am a former addict. I love listning to aic. I listened to it while I was using and now 2 years sober I am still rockin out to aic. I even plan to name my children after layne. Boy-layne and girl-laney. I have huge respect for layne and the rest of the band. Although I have had issues with accepting the new singer, I have to remember that the band needs to move on. This song I feel could be an athem for anyone who has lost anyone to addiction. I was close. I got out. But so many friends are still out there. Its true that black gives way to blue. I have to believe. We all need something to believe in. And for some reason aic gives me strenth at times. Love them as much as me. I could write a whole page. But I'm gonna go listen to aic. (:

This is a tribute to Layne Staley, Jerry's best friend, co-founder of Alice in Chains. Jerry was devastated by Layne's death. Aic didn't perform for years after Layne passed in 2002. Jerry hung onto the memory of Layne for a long time and didn't do anything with the band or music. And then he realized that he could say goodbye to Layne, and move forward. Always respecting Layne and his contributions to making aic the amazing force it is. Black (darkness and sadness) gives way to blue (new beginning). It's time for Layne to rest. And Jerry (and the rest of us) will never forget Layne. Ever.

Great song! Got to listen to AIC very recently and definitely has made a huge influence. Regret I missed listening to them all these years. Thought after Layne's passing they wouldn't make good music but this is definitely a great song.
I guess its about how Jerry feels about life now, must have been hard for him to move on . I am sure he is reminded of the earlier days of them as a band and all the great chances they are missing if Layne would have been alive!
    RIP Layne. Get Born Again!

Having experienced addiction first-hand, I find the recent aic relates the difficulties of addiction and the suffering it causes - both to those who have the addiction and those who are close to them. My reference to the lyric black gives way to blue is twofold:
    1. Like a bruise that at first starts as black upon initial impact turns blue when it heals. Which is a metaphor for healing. 2. Like a deep depression of blackness and hopelessness which gradually turns to a "blueness" or more of a melancholy or sadness - again a reflection of healing, possibly from grief/loss. Like many, lane lost his way and ultimately his battle with his addiction. My heart goes out to those who have experienced the pain of addiction and the joy of recovery.
