Alice In Chains – Your Decision lyrics
Time to change has come and gone
Watched your fears become your god
It's your decision

It's your decision

Overwhelmed, you chose to run
Apathetic to the stunt
It's your decision

It's your decision

You feed the fire that burned us all
When you lied
To feel the pain that spurs you on
Black inside

No one plans to take the path that brings you lower
And here you stand before us all and say it's over

It's over

(Solo)

It might seem an after thought
Yes it hurts to know you're bought
It's your decision

It's your decision

You feed the fire that burned us all
When you lied
To feel the pain that spurs you on
Black inside
It's your decision

It's your decision

No one plans to take the path that brings you lower
And here you stand before us all and say it's over

It's over

It's over...

I don't know the history of the song, but it's beautiful, sad, and true.
A song has the writer's experience embedded, but it also takes on a personalized meaning in the mind of the hearer. My rendering is that this is a song about one's life, and the inertia created by many decisions. We begin life with apparently limitless possibilities, and as we get busy living, we find our limitations, based on our talents, time, resources, birth circumstances, values. Choices teach us about fear. We also learn the best choices by making the wrong choices.
In time we realize that it's too late to change. The weight of our choices have determined with finality the course of our lives. We're swimming against a current made up of consequences, the weight of our decisions. And the decisions are based on learned fears, the results of our failed efforts to succeed, and the compromises we make when we discover our limits. Our lives are gradually reduced by our choices for survival. We eventually live only to work, eat, sleep, our feet mired in the problems resulting from our choices. We watch ourselves grow older, possibilities and opportunities diminishing, and realize that its too late to change, and we begin to wait, even long for death.
We look back at life and say reflectively, "it's your decision, no one plans to take the path that brings you lower. And here you stand before us all and say it's over"

My thoughts as I'm quite sure that this song was written in memory of layne staley and how his life ended in demise. Heroin overdose. Jerry cantrell was very close to staley in the beginning days of aic but after dirt, they somewhat drifted apart, mainly due to staley's long battle with addiction. As he drifted from the band, he also alienated his family. After his death layne's whole family gathered at the memorial to pay homage to him, with the whole band at their side. Staley's decisions in life, left those who loved him realizing that it was too late.
Basically what doomed has interpreted is appears completely accurate, I've just taken it a step further with the specific motivation for the lyrics. I think my view can be backed up from articles and interviews found on the net. Cheers!

Agree with Doomed, but I'll get more specific:.
When I first hear the lyrics I thought right away "drug/alcohol addiction". So I also agree with Ghostman66's take as well.
"Watched your fears become your god" - in 12-step programs you learn that a "higher power" (basically a god) is in control of you, and you have no control over the shitty things that happen in your life. Instead, the lyrics say - your fears are controling you, causing you to use drugs/alcohol.
    "Overwhelmed, you chose to run
Apathetic to the stunned" - choose to run away from your problems by getting high, not seeming to care what it does to those around you.
"Yes it hurts to know you're bought" - basically a slave to the drug.

Okay, my first attempt at interpreting this song was probably a bit circumspect and premature. For some reason, there are some songs I listen to over and over and over until I 'get it'. This masterpiece is one of those songs. For each person, that 'getting it' is different, yes? In retrospect, who among us has not felt this way (Your Decision) when love just didn't quite go our way? The end.

I agree with what has already been said about this likely being in memory of Staley. I think the words "it's your decision" also reflects the acknowledgement (or maybe realization) by Cantrell that there is/was nothing anyone could do to save him. It was his decision. It was his demons that he ultimately couldn't battle.
As someone who has battled depression and once attempted suicide, it sounds all too familiar. You sink and sink, never meaning to choose the "path that takes you lower". For some, it becomes too late to change.
I think the band is saying that Staley went down a very dark path and there was nothing hey could do about it. "And here you stand before us all and say it's over... it's over.".

I think it's about the decisions layne staley made, because the songs from black gives way to blue are mostly about staley. The decisions staley made when he did heroin. It seems that jerry cantrell sings this song as if the decisions people make cannot be judged, the decisions one person makes does not harm anyone else. For example, somebody steals an mp3 player from somebody you don't know and you rant on the thief as if he stole from you, in reality there's no harm to you and the stealing.

Wow, to me it seems like Doomed has it. I think I've been that man. You never want that, you never really realize that is exactly what your doing. That fire seems to only be burning the skin that you live in, but the people in your life that love you are desperatly grabbing you to save you from going under. "Your decision" really does mean everything, to yourself and everyone arround you.
