Arctic Monkeys – Cornerstone lyrics
Thought I saw you in the battleship
But it was only a look a like
She was nothing but a vision trick
Under the warning light
She was close, close enough to be your ghost
But my chances turned to toast
When I asked her if I could call her your name

I thought I saw you in the rusty hook
Huddled up in wicker chair
I wandered up for a closer look
And kissed who ever was sitting there

She was close, and she held me very tightly
Till I asked awfully politely, please
Can I call you her name

And I elongated my lift home,
Yeah I let him go the long way round
I smelt your scent on the seatbelt
And kept my shortcuts to myself

I thought I saw you in the parrots beak
Messing with the smoke alarm
It was too loud for me to hear her speak
And she had a broken arm

It was close, so close that the walls were wet
And she wrote it out in letraset
No you can't call me her name

Tell me where's your hiding place
I'm worried I'll forget your face
And I've asked everyone
And I'm beginning to think I imagined you all along

I elongated my lift home
Yeah I let him go the long way round
I smelt your scent on the seatbelt
And kept my shortcuts to myself

I saw your sister in the cornerstone
On the phone to the middle man

When I saw that she was on her own
I thought she might understand
She was close, well you couldn't get much closer
She said I'm really not supposed to but yes,
You can call me anything you want

Alex turner is a genius. I hope he keeps writing such poetic masterpieces as this. One hears alot of s* lyrics in everyday songs about the loss of someone truly loved that are diluted to meagre words like "i want you back", "i miss you" and "you're the one". I suppose that pop stuff is easier to listen to and sells. But turner delves deeper and packs such a tragic punch as he describes the mental bomb that goes off inside you when you lose what you believed to be your soulmate.

He meets a girl at a club / bar then the night ends with him only having her name. He then goes on to see if he can find this wonder girl of his. Then goes looking for her in other clubs / bars: 'i thought I saw you in the battleship', but he can't fine this special girl: 'but it was only a look a like'. Then calling the girls he meets by the name he was given, which the girls he meets do not like: 'but my chances turned to toast when I asked her if I could call you her name. '
He continues the pursuit of this woman by visiting many bars: 'rusty hook, battleship' in search of her.
Then beleives he can not find her: 'tell me where's your hiding place (can't find her).
I'm worried i'll forget your face (has'nt seen her for a while, all he has to remember her by).
And I've asked everyone (asking if anyone knows her).
And I'm beginning to think I imagined you all along (giving up search).
I'm conclusion, meets a girl at a bar, only gets her name, goes looking for her in different clubs: 'rusty hook, battleship', then left with a girl who agrees to be called by the name.

A man broken hearted with the passing of his lover, wander around the city,.
Everywhere he goes, he sees his lover's in every woman he encountered, even in the cab he can feel the scent of his lover,.
Clearly this man is totally distraught with his lover's gone, then he stumble upon his lover's sister, the sister knowing his misery decided to play along even though she is quite hesitant in the beginning, and permit him to call her with her sister's name, and then the man falls down on his knees and sobbing like a child, he finally able to let all the pain out in every single tears he shed.
The sister took the man back to his home, and put him to sleep, as she watches the man sleep in tears, she knows that life is fragile, she has witnessed the pain of losing, love can bring you joy, but in the end it will leave you in misery, alone.
It is the inevitable, and she wonders when it's her turn to lose someone so dear to her, will she be able to cope with the pain?
And so she sat there the whole night, wondering.
(sorry for my grammar, english is not my mother tongue but I love this song very much).
