Benny Mardones – Into The Night lyrics
She's just sixteen years old
Leave her alone, they say,
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet
But I want you to know

If I could fly
I'd pick you up
I'd take you into the night
And show you a love
Like you've never seen - ever seen
It's like having a dream
Where nobody has a heart
It's like having it all
And watching it fall apart
And I would wait till the end
Of time for you
And do it again, it's true
I can't measure my love
There's nothing to compare it to
But I want you to know...

I personally think the meaning of this song is rather obvious. I think it pretty funny though, those of us who were growing up to this song when it first came out never saw anything wrong or immoral to it and no we're the one who can't stand the lyrics of todays current music. What comes around goes around a guess. I don't even to think about what my grandkids will be listening, thinking there's nothing wrong it but just a sweet love song. My favorite thing about this song, is when I was a helicopter pilot with the Coast Guard. There was an all girls bording school with a big pool and private beach. Our patrol pattern took us right over the school several times a day. When the girls were out we'd blast this song over the pa system. I was called into the co's office more than once for this song.

Sorry all. This creeps me out. He sounds like a pervert. At 16 yrs old, I was working at a restuarant and was constantly propositioned by older guys. What the.?! I think older guys like under aged girls because they don't have to work hard to impress them. It also makes older men feel superior that these young girls look up to them. Some are just chasing the cherry. I think it's pathetic!

This song kinda hits home for me. When I was 16, I met this guy. The sweetest, funniest, dorkiest, weirdest, kindest (all the stuff I looked for back then) guy you could meet. He told me about a month after we met that he was falling hard for me. I told him I felt the same way but wasn't sure if it would work cuz he was 23 (my mom wasn't about to let me start seeing a man 7 years older than me anyway) & wasn't sure if it he was just looking to be the creepy older guy just looking to get in my pants cuz he wants to sleep with a girl who ain't legal or what. As it turns out though, it's 10 years later & I'm still with him & we're still head over heels for each other (or as Jason Lee in "Mallrats" says "We're still retarded for each other. Lol).

I can say his voice was captivating and the passion that he emotes especially toward the end of the song leads me to believe that his intentions weren't as innocent as he says. However as a young insecure teen, I felt those emotions coming through and I hoped someone would feel that strongly for me . I wish he would been more successful. RIP to that wonderful voice.

I felt a strong bond with Benny back in the 80s. This song got me through a lot of lonely nights in high school. The song and the video connected with me on a very emotional level. I can't count the number of times I wished that was me on that rug with Benny.

The official explanation on this one doesn't make any sense. If he was really helping out a neighbor who had been abandoned, why not just write about that? How do you go from "I pay her to walk my dog" to "I would wait til the end of time for you and do it again". (Yeah right because then she wouldn't be 16 anymore.) And why do we never hear from "Heidi" herself on the matter? No speaking lines in the video or in real life? So if given the chance, he would pick her up and take her into the night. That's what owls do. That's bird of prey behavior. The song does have a nice early '80s dark morbid sound, it's sung in a creepy voice and it has all that screaming at the end, which altogether makes it wonderfully ghastly, it outdoes much of the emo and goth music that came after it - but then the words ruin it.

The only saving grace for the lyrics is that he leaves it hypothetical. It’s always “IF I COULD... I’D PICK YOU UP” (meaning he hasn’t done it, will never do it because he just can’t). We know this because at the end he’s still saying “I would”, not “I will, did, will eventually, have... it never happens. It’s a lesson that many have been through that if things were different we could be together. Things like race, economics, distance, timing, religion, any reason you cannot be together (yet still long for the person). I’m this case it was age. The real story by the writers is a little different but it doesn’t quite seem to add up with the lyrics to me personally although I believe it inspired the song of course.

He's trying to help a 16 year old girl. From her family. My ass! He's a fucken pervert. And should of been in jail. If he showed up at my door trying to get my little girl. And he rolled his eyes at me like that I would of grabbed him by his ugly hair and pulled it out. And to top it off he's making out with her at the end of the video. Who is he trying to fool. He was screwing that little girl. Probably paying her money to help her family out. Pervert sick sob.

Into the night. . Benny fall in love with a sixeten yeargirl at the time he was young to. He grow to love her because she was different, but benny tried so hard to be with her and her father just wont let them be happy. There love was saparated by fools. Once you love somone its hard to let go, so benny waited to the end to be with her. In other words loves is real, and it does not mater what age you are, we all fall in love.

The true meaning of Into the Night is wanting to show someone what love really is. But not being able to. He was talking about a friend of his who liked a girl younger than him.& he said "shes just sixteen man leave her alone..."and they came up with the lyrics. Benny is saying that if he could pick them up and show them what love is. He would! But he can't. So he wrote a song! :)

The song is about a girl that goes to benny and tells him her father ran out on her and her family and benny took it on himself to give her and her brother small jobs to put $$ in their pockets to help them out. He felt so bad for her and her family and was so angry at her father he wanted to help her family. The part about her being 16 years old is because she came over once when he was up all night collaborating with a bandmate and his friend commented about her physical appears and benny said "she just 16 years old" (basically leave her alone) you can search the meaning and benny is telling the story if you don't believe it.

This is a sad romance based on a real life experience Benny has with a girl called Heidi who he helps out from a devastating situation where she and her family were dumped by the father and left in poverty.
In the song he wants to show her what love is but can’t because she’s too young and he can’t fly. He has to wait to the end of time to be with her. The film clip of Benny and the girl shows they did make it in the end and it’s simply been done to follow the lyrics “If I could fly”, but of course he can’t. In the end scenes, she looks older and kisses him back so I think he did wait as he said he would. The real life Benny was a lovely person that still barely managed to write I love you when he was a month away from death due to the dreadful Parkinson’s disease he had. In real life when he overcame his demons he was a wonderful, humble and gracious person.
So sad to see him gone.
I was sixteen (legal) when I met my partner, thirty one. He thought I was older, I thought he was younger. We waited anyway and thirty seven years later still in love.

No one in this thread seems to have a clue about the true origin of this song. It was inspired by Benny’s 16 year-old dog walker! Robert Tepper, who co-wrote the song with Benny, made some comment about the girl…I assume it was sexual and inappropriate. Benny literally replied to him with, “She’s just 16 years old. Leave her alone.” This the song was born. https://www.grammy.com/news/night-singersongwriter-benny-mardones-dies-73
