There are two people in love, but when they separate for awhile, the love they feel for each other starts to unravel, dissapear, and they become estranged due to the seperation. This has actually happened to me before. If you love someone, but lose contact with them for awhile, you become weird strangers. So I think the devil is just the force that takes the love, that is where the love dissapears to. And the devil in my case would be, human nature, how you react to someone you used to know but haven't seen or spoke to in awhile. It's always awkward. Anyway, that love will never be returned, it's gone, lost to time, so you have to make new love.

I live 1500 miles from my love. Like being lost in the labyrinth with a ball of string, I hang onto my feelings for her like a thread, slowly unravelling, the longer I go without her, the more pain and fear of loss I experience. 'we will hvae to make new love'. When I move over to live with her, we will have to start again, clinging to a lost love, like a piece of yarn in the dark.

I already posted a comment here, but forgot a detail that might be brought uop. To add to my balletic interpretation above... the Devil in Björk's lyrics could also be identified with Rothbart's tempting daughter. She, however, is but an extension of his will, and so this interpretation is very much indistinguishable from my original

This song is a beautiful, modernized intepretation of a classical narrative: "Swan Lake"! A beautiful princess is transformed into a swan by a sorcerer. Some nights, she is allowed a return to her former shape; and uses this time to be with her beloved prince. The sorcerer employs his seductive daughter to bewitch the prince, who falls in love with another woman. The swan princess, heartbroken, commits suicide.
For those that do not know, it features in a ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky - and in the video for this song, Björk appears wearing a suit very similar in design to traditional figurines for the swan princess!
The lyrics are, too, a nod to this fairy tale. They speak of a love that has come and gone many times, whose abscence charactizes it: "While you are away..."
They also mention a "devil" (whom I certainly identify with Rothbart, the magician from "Swan Lake") who is responsible for stealing this love - maybe even causing this absence.
Finally, the central concept in these lyrics, is the imagery of a ball of yarn unraveling as a metaphor for heartbreak. It is a poetic capture of pain that is more elegant than painful... as is the swan princess'. I believe this unraveling doubles as a symbol of death - which in turn, is, in the ballet, synonymous with a broken heart.
