Broken Bells – The High Road lyrics
Go down to wait all night
She's bound to run amok
Invested enough in it anyhow
To each his own
The garden needs sorting out
She curls her lips on the bow
I don't know if I'm dead or not
To anyone

Come on and get the minimum
Before you open up your eyes
This army has so many heads
To analyze...
Come on and get your overdose
Collect it at the borderline
And They want to get up in your head

[Chorus:]
Cause they know, and so do I
The high road is hard to find
A detour in your new life
Tell all of your friends goodbye

The dawn to end all nights
That's all we hoped it was
A break from the warfare in your house
To each his own
A soldier is bailing out
He curled his lips on the barrel
And I don't know if the dead can talk
To anyone

Come on and get the minimum
Before you open up your eyes
This army has so many hands
Are you one of us?
Come on and get your overdose
Collect it at the borderline
And They want to get up in your head

[Chorus:]
Cause they know, and so do I
The high road is hard to find
A detour in your new life
Tell all of your friends goodbye

It's too late to change your mind
You let loss be your guide
(Repeat x3)

This song reminds me of a bad trip I had about two years ago. The effect that particular situation, and me trying to cover up my wounds and fill the void I had become aware of, by months of intense drug use. There was one point during all of it that I was sitting at my mothers kitchen table, I looked her straight in her eyes, and asked her if I was dead. 'i don't know if I'm dead or not to anyone". It was the turning point in my life. It truly made me examine myself, and my connection with god or lack thereof. I have come along way, i searched for a long time to find something to help me, for a meaning, for anything that i could rely on. I looked high and low, and finally realized that the only one that could help me, the only one that could ever deliver me from the shell of a human being i had become was christ. He gave me a reason to live, a reason to get better, and i have found new strength and a fresh life in him. This is coming from someone who was very against the church and religion before my "problems". Idk what I'm trying to say, or why I'm writing this on here. And now I've found myself rambeling. Please excuse me. When I started reading the comments it was heavy on my heart to share my experience, idk why. I hope that this helps someone. Thanks for allowing me a chance to share this.

To the dude who commented on dec 10th that is very true. I've been soul searching dude. And I think I'm 'this' close to reaching something beautifull. One of my old friends from my use to be neighborhood called me & let me know that he just got robbed for the 3rd time, I was one of his good friends & he says he needs me back over there, I've had visions of a future but. I was miserable back over there, I was lost and in a state of declivity and they made it no better for me. Since I've moved down here about a hour away I've come into contact with the true meaning of life. I'm pursuing this belief despite what anybody thinks. I told my old friend that I will try to make it back down there this weekend because it angers me that somebody stole from him, its hard for me not to. I feel I have to do something about it. & I don't know why I'm sharing this too strangers, sorry. But I have nobody else to tell it too other than myself.

I think that it is about wondering through life and not sure what the meaning to it all is. There is so many distractions everywhere, how can you ever be sure you are taking the high road? "it is too late to change your mind, you let loss be your guide", meaning you are going to make mistakes, and we all learn from them, but sometimes it is too late. I think he is not just referring to himself, but to all the different paths you can take in life, and not really knowing what the high road is. Like joining the army for patriotism and then because of what you saw you end up killing yourself.
The song is simply amazing, a little depressing and very beautiful all at the same time. So overwhelmed.

This song is a poetic prophecy regarding the end and the decidions we must make as individuals. To get the "minimal" is in regard to the basic knowledge needed to make the correct decisions. "before you open up your eyes" regards to death, as the life is often referred to as "sleep" in many spiritual scriptures. Getting in your head and the reference to "they" with a capital letter referrs to a plural proper noun indicating "they" as being evil spiritual beings that sieze us through daily B. S. That is prevasive on this earth plane. "too late to change your mind" would be the time when our eyes are opened to the fact that through our own passions. "loss" in this case, was the road that a person guieds themselves through this life. This could have been slotted with any vice. The important message is that we should all open your mind and stand up and free yourself from the throne of nescience and move toward the light. Truly inspiritional and worthy of all the accolades.

I see this song as a metaphor for how our human minds are being tolled with.
    Go down. (to hell).
    She's bound. (no faith).
    Invested enough. (surrending).
To each his own. I"ll explain this at the end.
The garden. (garden of adam &eve).
    She. Female energy.
I don't know. (where is reality).
Come on and get the minimum and come on and get the overdose relates to slowly being brain washed by the army of many heads. Religions.
And they well collect your soul at the borderline.
The dawn. Hoping it was just a bad dream.
    A break. Recognizing the evil.
    A soldier. Killing the old.
    He curled. Male energy.
I don't know if the dead can talk. (can he talk to god to get back his soul).
The army is evil and they have many ways to get into your head, however your subconscious knows there is a high road, and once you know the truth you can not turn back.
My favorite part is the ending line. "you let loss be you guide". Because when you let go of dark matter only light can replace it. " you let love be your god"
Kay back to each his own. "is your test of will or weakness"
I love this song, it is amazing how words can penetrate deep meaning and every inturpitation is ones own truth to their life's experience.

Its about choosing the "high road" the better way of living. Overdosing, killing yourself, (prostitution possibly) can sometimes be the easy way out. It's too late to change your mind when you let loss be your guide. "the low road. " the easier way out of "the welfare in you house" or whatever else is a trap. It sounds like it's comparing joining the military for the wrong reasons in there as well. The high road is hard to find but don't settle.

Its about saying goodbye to the oppression in your life (whatever that may be) and starting a new life somewhere else. Talks about a bad relationship and so many enemies its hard to make it out. Says you'll kill yourself if you don't get out but to each his own. Or go on until you go no further and collect what you have coming to you. But ultimately if your contemplating this than its too late already because you should have just know it was too much and left and never looked back.
