Cat Stevens – Cats In The Cradle lyrics
Cats in the Cradle
By Harry Chapin

A child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking before I knew it and as he grew
He said, "I'm gonna be like you, Dad,
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Dad, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then
.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on lets play
Can you teach me to throw? " I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do" He said "that's okay"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm going to be like him"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Dad, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then.

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please? "

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Son, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then.

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said "Id like to see you if you don't mind"
He said "Id love to Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.
But It's sure nice talking to you, Dad,
It's been sure nice talking to you........ "
And as I hung up the phone it had occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me,
My boy was just like me..............

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Son, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then.

This song has made me cry since I was a child. My husband likes this song but it does remind him of his own father. It was our goal not to have our children feel that way about their dad. There were many times that my husband had to be busy with work, but he always made time for them. Far more time than our fathers made for us--I'm talking about full-on homework, sports, fishing, camping, vacations, talking, special dinners. It's a little disappointing to find that they ask for our help but they don't make time for us in their lives--quite the opposite of the way we did it but so similar to the sad song.

I would listen to this song many years ago. This is one of the saddest songs I have heard. A child during his personal accomplishments in life wanted his dad to share that special time with the one he admired and loved. In later years the dad realized his son was like him. Nothing to be proud of. Pray what he learned was not instilled in his own children.
The greatest gift God has given us is are children. Nourish them, spend time with them. Life is so short, time passes so quickly. COVID-19 has given us the opportunity to show unconditional love. Praise God!

Sometimes a child only wants to spend time with their father (or parent) but the parent always has something else to do. The child growths up learning to make do with their time they had alone, so by the time the father or parent wants to spend time with the child, the child has grown to accustom to finding others to spend time with. Thus feeling no obligation to spend time with the father or parent. No matter how much I work or tired I felt, I made time for my three daughters growing, because I wanted them to know I will be there for them & maybe they will be there for me when I'm looking for someone to talk too.

We actually manifest our "fathers" consciously or sub-consciously. The thing is I think we underestimate the role of dads in our lives and how much the child look up to the father as a role model; as the centre of our universe till it's too late. There's a sense of regret, of being too late in recognising that our children are moulded by our time, love and affirmation for them at the end. Our children reflect and echo uncannily our fathers' successes and failures. What you have strove for all your life can become too much to bear at the end of the day.
