Cat Stevens – The Wind lyrics
I listen to the wind
To the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think,
Only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
But never, never never never
I never wanted water once
No, never, never, never

I listen to my words but
They fall far below
I let my music take me where
My heart wants to go
I swam upon the devil's lake
But never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake
No, never, never, never

I think this song is about being separated from God. This someone did not know Jesus, therefore "sat upon the setting sun" but "never wanted water once". Jesus makes mention of the living water that He can give and that He is the way to life. "I swam upon the devil's lake" means being engrossed in sin and death. Lake of fire is the eternal punishment for those who are wicked. "I'll never make the same mistake" means this someone has repented and does not want to go back to the old sinful ways. "I listen to the wind of my soul" and "Where I'll end up, well I think only God really knows" means that the spirit is now in God's hands.

Quite simply, this song is about a very common moment most come to. At the time of the song's writing the then Cat was very seriously ill and facing what he thought might be his death. As is the case with most in this situation he began to examine his faith, trying to discover his true feelings on the matter. This is a song about his departure from a Christian belief system and the beginning of his journey into Islam.

"I sat apon the setting sun"
makes sense when you realize he just had a bout with serious illniess and thought about death.
"I never wanted water once." I read this as "wanted for water" like he always had water or thought he had water. But maybe now he wants some and he didn't before. Seems like a metaphor for spiritual guidance or wisdom. He thought he was OK.
"My words fall far below" they don't measure up to what he really is feeling maybe? It seems self-depricating.
But he lets his music take him where his hearts wants to go.
"I swam apon the Devil's Lake." By this time he was pretty much a rock-star already. I think he means he got into the sin and lifestyle that comes with that. But apparently not anymore. "Never never neh ver."
The ai sentiment analysis on my review is making a sad face. the song has some sad overtones but it is about transformation.

The song is a picture of a spirit sitting by a "devil's lake", singing words like birds and wandering of the beauty of being and creating music. There is one restriction for this beauty and lightness - you must not desire or swim in the lake. When I was young, I noticed the light and free feeling in the song and for the long time the words were some kind of enigma for me.
