Christopher Cross – Sailing lyrics
It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Sailing

Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity

The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

I've always loved this song. But in listening to barry manilow's gorgeous and tremendous adaption and performance of it, I began to think of how I feel when I'm writing.
When I "sail" to my canvas, which is a blank page, the words take me anywhere I want to go in "never never land". And for those moments in time, no matter what's happening around me, I'm free to dream and find "serenity" as I write my own story.
Returning to "sanity" isn't difficult, I have kids, they pull me back. But I'm refreshed and ready to take on the world - or at least cook dinner!
Thank you for this wonderful song!

This song was written about actual sailing. Christopher Cross wrote the song about the days he spent sailing with a older man who befriended him as a teenager who became somewhat of a father figure to him, since his own father was an alcoholic and never had a good relationship. He describes sailing as a way to escape the difficulties of growing up in that environment and reflects on the great feelings and memories he had of that time.

I played this song on my phone when my girlfriend and I sat on the balcony of our room on a cruise ship while it was pulling out of port at the very beginning of the cruise.I sincerely teared up! To me he is talking about sailing literally. The canvas that can do miracles is the canvas of the sail itself. To me the canvas was the scenes we saw from that balcony,, moon rises,, sun rises, sunsets,, and water so deep blue, you’d swear you were witnessing a postcard being made. And if the wind is right you can sail away,, or to me what this means,, is simply enough, if the things in your life, time, money etc. align, you can take this journey. The experience itself was serenity, and tranquility. Christopher Cross was right. It’s not far to never never land.
