Creed – My Own Prison lyrics
A court is in session, a verdict is in
No appeal on the docket today
Just my own sin
The walls are cold and pale
The cage made of steel
Screams fill the room
Alone I drop and kneel

Silence now the sound
My breath the only motion around
Demons cluttering around
My face showing no emotion
Shackled by my sentence
Expecting no return
Here there is no penance
My skin begins to burn

(And I said, oh)
So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside
Which only fuels their selfish pride
(And I said, oh)
We're all held captive out from the sun
A sun that shines on only some
We the meek are all in one

I hear a thunder in the distance
See a vision of a cross
I feel the pain that was given
And that sad day of loss
A lion roars in the darkness
Only he holds the key
A light to free me from my burden
And grant me life eternally

Should've been dead
On a Sunday morning
Banging my head
No time for mourning
Ain't got no time

Should've been dead
On a Sunday morning
Banging my head
No time for mourning
Ain't got no time

(And I said, oh)
So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside
Which only fuels their selfish pride
(And I said, oh)
We're all held captive out from the sun
A sun that shines on only some
We the meek are all in one

I cry out to God
Seeking only His decision
Gabriel stands and confirms
I've created my own prison

I cry out to God
Seeking only His decision
Gabriel stands and confirms
I've created my own prison

So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside
Which only fuels our selfish pride
We're all held captive out from the Sun
A Sun that shines on only some
We the meek are all in one

So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside
Which only fuels their selfish pride

We're all held captive out from the Sun
A Sun that shines on only some
We the meek are all in one

It took me five plus years to read these lyrics. I couldn't bring myself to do it. My son took his own life on June 20th 2010. His last status was "should have been dead on a Sunday morning banging my head." And yes it was a Sunday. This song is clearly about how a depressed person is feeling on that last day.

This song could mean several things:.
1: the obvious meaning to this song is that the guy is facing god in final judgement and he isn't going to heaven. He says he needs the help of jesus to escape his "own prison".
2: another story you can get out of this is that the guy is on death row and is seeking guidance from god before he is ordered to death.
3: another is that this guy has done terrible things in life and is haunted by the bad deeds of his past. As in he created a prison in his mind.

This song is about choices. About how your present circumstances usually are the culmination of the choices you make good or bad. You are bound by the choices you make. If you buy a car you can't afford and it prevents you from paying your other bills than you are trapped in a financial prison you created. That is a simplistic example but one nonetheless. It could be drug addiction alcoholism or whatever. The cool part is how in the song he talks about accepting his choices as his and being accountable for them not making excuses and accepting the repercussions.

Interesting that no one get's it. We al sinned and face that judgement. But he should have been dead. It was the Lion that roared in the darkness the was the light to free him from his burden and grant him life eternally. The prison was of his own making But the Lion of Judah (Jesus) set him free. Even though he deserved to die. No there is no time for mourning because he has work to do.

I may be wrong but this man is standing before God because he took his own life. And the "court is in session" part meaning his final judgement day. He is in fear of not going to heaven. And the way he sees it is to except it for what it is. Because there is no time to dwell on it now. So just take his judgement with his head held high because all he can do now is ask God for forgivness because his own actions got him to this final point and as God is about to make that final call all these things are running through his mind. And kneels down to God and excepts his final judgement.
