Damien Rice – 9 Crimes lyrics
Lisa: Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
It's the wrong time
For somebody new
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse

Lisa: Is that alright with you?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright with you?
If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright with you?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright with you?
With you...

Damien: Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be cheating on you
It's the wrong time
She's pulling me through
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse

Damien: Is that alright with you?
Give my gun away (Lisa: Is that alright? Yeah.)when it's loaded
Is that alright with you?
If you don't shoot it how (Lisa: Is that alright? Yeah.) am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright with you?
Give my gun away (Lisa: Is that alright? Yeah.) when it's loaded
Is that alright
Is that alright with you?

Damien: Is that alright, yeah?
Give my gun away (Lisa: Is that alright? Yeah.) when it's loaded
Is that alright with you?
If you don't shoot it how (Lisa: Is that alright? Yeah.) am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright with you?
Give my gun away (Lisa: Is that alright? Yeah.) when it's loaded
Is that alright
Is that alright with you?

(Slight Overlap..)
Damien: Is that alright, yeah?
Lisa: Give my gun away when it's loaded
Damien: Is that alright, yeah?
Lisa: If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it
Damien: Is that alright, yeah?
Lisa: Give my gun away when it's loaded
Damien: Is that alright, is that alright?

D & L: Is that alright with you?

Damien: No...

I think the "loaded gun" is the heart, physically and emotionally. I am in a committed relationship, but then there is you and you come into my mind when I am with my partner. It makes me someone I don't believe I am. He is in a committed relationship but he is beyond the the thinking about of cheating, and is doing it, though he thinks he still loves his partner, he is letting this cheat/flirtation pull him through a rough patch with his partner.

Most people seem to think the singers are singing about their off the books relationship with each other. I think the singers are the committed partners, and their relationship hit a rough point. She is in a romantic flirtation, he is actually sleeping with someone else. Neither see themselves as people who would cheat, but are facing the possibility. For whatever reason, they are not giving their passion to each other, and want permission from their partner to find the release they are no longer giving each other. And the song ends with the answer: No. It is not alright.

    So, now what?

I think people are taking the lyrics too literally. I think the guy has lost the woman, most likely she's passed away, and he's struggling with the opportunity to move on with someone new but feeling like that is cheating. He's asking permission to leave his anger and pain (his gun that's always loaded) behind from someone who can't answer to give it in order to move on with his life. The new woman is trying to 'pull' him to her to a new life and through his anguish and he can't imagine leaving his pain behind since it's the only thing he's had for some time.

Hi - first of all a really great song, and done very emotonally. I afraid my interpretation is pretty earthy but here goes [don't hate me my, parents made me this way]. To me the "gun" is a fredian reference to his penis/love. "if you don't shoot it how am i supposed to hold it". Or if I don't have s** with you how am I supposed t hold the need to orgasim. In this context the lyrics bare themselves. "give my gun away when it's loaded. Is that alright? Is that alright with you? " "it's the wrong kind of place to be cheating on you. It's the wrong time but she's pulling me through, it's a small crime and i've got no excuse. Is that alright". I sugest this means he's having s** with someone else without emotion because something is not allowing him to have s** with his lover. He's sexually frustrated and want permission to have s** with someone else. Considering muscians are often on the road, possibly it's because he is away from his lover for weeks. I'm just sayen.
