Dan Fogelberg – Same Old Lang Syne lyrics
Met my old lover in the
Grocery store

The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stole behind her in the
Frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve
She didn't recognize the
Face at first
But then her eyes flew
Open wide
She went to hug me and she
Spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.
We took her groceries to the
Checkout stand
The food was totalled up and
Bagged
We stood there lost in our
Embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.
We went to have ourselves
A drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at
The liquor store
And we drank it in her car.
We drank a toast to
Innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond
The emptiness
But neither one knew how.
She said she'd married her
An architect
Who kept her warm and safe
And dry
She would have liked to say she
Loved the man
But she didn't like to lie.
I said the years had been a
Friend to her
And that her eyes were still
As blue
But in those eyes I wasn't
Sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude.
She said she saw me in the
Record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was
Heavenly
But the traveling was hell.
We drank a toast to
Innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond
The emptiness
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another 'auld lang syne'...
The beer was empty and our
Tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was
Back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make
My way back home
The snow turned into rain --

I wish I would have never let you go after 35 years. I wish I could have appreciated how wonderful you were back then. Yes, we both moved on, but I wonder what it would be like to have you as more than a friend. Regrets are with me daily and serve as my punishment for letting you go. I love you.

Amazingly said. This song affects me in the same way. The first failure of ones life is the loss of their first love. I have never forgotten mine and never will. She let me go at 19 and there is not a month at 54 years old when that old painful feeling is not felt. Both of us moved on. In the end there is nothing but love and I plan to take this love with me.

The song begins with the snow falling Christmas Eve. That is a joyous time and a white Christmas evokes feelings of love, family, and kindness. The last verse is about things lost that can't be recovered. "I felt that old familiar pain." They tried to reach beyond the emptiness and recover some of what they had, but time had created a divide that could not be breached. The traditional song "Auld Lang Syne" poses the rhetorical question about whether old friendships and love should be forgotten. Auld Lang Syne is Scottish and imprecisely translated as "old long since" or the olden times. They lived a moment of eloquence, trying to reach beyond the divide but realized it couldn't be recovered. They were living an Auld Lang Syne moment remembering the past and the love that was shared. It couldn't be sustained in the present. And so the Christmas snow turned into rain.

I think the obvious is there, the old flame and the lost innocence of youth. At almost 50 this song means so much more to me than it did when I first heard it as a kid (long before I knew the pain of failure). When I hear this song today the medaphores are much more powerful. I think of a life unfulfilled. I think of my life and all its failures. The medaphore in the last last line of the song when the snow turns to rain leaves me paralyzed.

When I read Hemmingway's "The Sun Also Rises" in college the last couple of lines of the book made me stay in bed for a week. This song does that to me as well but today I can't stay in bed. There far too much to do and hopefully I will find some happiness as I trudge through my day.
