Daughtry – Open Up Your Eyes lyrics
A single rose left to remember
As a single tear falls from her eye
Another cold day in December
A year from the day she said goodbye

It seems it's only been a moment
Since the angels took him from her arms
And she was left there
Holding on to their tomorrow
But as they laid him in the ground
Her heart would sing without a sound

For the first time you can open your eyes
And see the world without your sorrow
And no one knows the pain you left behind
And all the peace you could never find
It's waiting there to hold and keep you
Welcome to the first day of your life
Just open up your eyes

A single lifetime lays behind her
As she draws her final breath
And just beyond the door he'll find her
Taking her hand he softly says

For the first time you can open your eyes
And see the world without your sorrow
And no one knows the pain you left behind
And all the peace you could never find
It's waiting there to hold and keep you
Welcome to the first day of your life
Just open up your eyes

As I lay down tonight
Safe on the other side
No more tears to cry

For the first time you can open your eyes
And see the world without your sorrow
And no one knows the pain you left behind
And all the peace you could never find
It's waiting there to hold and keep you
Welcome to the first day of your life
Just open up your eyes

I don't think it's about suicide. The woman loses someone she loves but silently sings about what's waiting for him on the other side - heaven - where there is no pain or sorrow. It says she lives a lifetime before her final breath. In her death, she is reunited with her love in heaven where she, too, can open her eyes to a new life of peace with no sorrow or pain.

I believe this song is about two lovers finally united beyond the grave in heaven. I believe they are lovers, not mother and child, because when he was "taken from her arms" and she was left "holding on to their tomorrow". A single (red) rose" represents their eternal or enduring love. He apparently for some reason suffered terribly in this life. She did not want to see him go, but also did not want to see him suffer. When he died she is happy for his release and she sings to him "For the first time you can open your eyes." This chorus is always singing to the person who has just died and is now free of their suffering in this life. In the second verse, when she is old and dies, then he takes her and and welcomes her with the same "for the first time you can open your eyes" and they are reunited in Heaven. I believe it is heaven because "the angels took him from her arms" and that's where angels are, and finally the last verse or bridge sounds like it is God Himself who lays her down and welcomes her to the other side.

I had no idea this song was about a suicide. My aging father passed away on a cold day in december. It was 3 years ago, and it was heart related. Now my widowed mother is fighting a courageous battle with cancer, and is slowly losing that battle. Her prayer has been that the lord would come get her and take her to my dad. I had been trying to be the strong one through this time; she's been given "any day, maybe another week", but when my daughter introduced me to this song just yesterday, what little strength I had disappeared in the first few lines, and I wondered how the writers knew about us. It's a beautiful song, and I simply want to say thank you.

My brother in-law passed away 12 years ago. He battled alcohol and tobacco and beat them both. He endured alcoholic parents. He and my sister married when he was 19 and she was 17. They both received degrees from purdue. Him an A. S and her a B. S. With honors. They had three wonderful boys. He died at age 43 from heart disease that he didn't know he had. He left her "holding on to their tomorrow" - those three boys. They boys are all successful men, but my sister has gone through so much pain and sorrow to get them to be successful. One day, hopefully after she has lived a long life, brad will be waiting for his beautiful bride, robin, on the other side.
This song is about what you make it. That is the beauty of "open up your eyes".
