Elaine Paige – I Know Him So Well lyrics
Nothing is so good it lasts eternally,
Perfect situations must go wrong,
But this has never yet prevented me,
Wanting far too much,
For far too long,
Looking back,
I could have played it differently,
Won a few more moments,
Who can tell,
But it took time to understand the man,
Now at least I know
I know him well
Wasn't it good?
(Oh so good)
Wasn't he fine?
(Oh so fine)
Isn't it madness,
He can't be mine?
But in the end
He needs a little bit
More than me,
More security,
He needs his fantasy and freedom,
I know him so well
No-one in your life is with you constantly,
No-one is completely on your side,
And though I'd move my world to be with him,
Still the gap between us is too wide,
Looking back,
(Looking back)
I could have played it differently,
(I could have played it some other way),
Learned about the man,
Before I fell
(I was just a little girl)
But I was ever so much younger then,
(Maybe, so much younger then)
Now at least I know
I know him well
Wasn't it good?
(Oh so good)
Wasn't he fine?
(Oh so fine)
Isn't it madness,
He won't be mine?
Didn't I know?
How it would go,
If I knew from the start,
Why am I falling apart?
Wasn't it good
Wasn't he fine?
Isn't it madness,
He won't be mine?
But in the end,
He needs a little bit
More than me,
More security,
He needs his fantasy and freedom,
I know him so well,
It took time to understand him,
I know him so well

This song can apply to women as well as men. How many times have you met someone who you thought was the one and no matter how much you give or change for them it just is not enough until you realize it will never be enough. I think that song tells of those stories. But we still try and hope someday we will achieve what we want from that special someone.

I never understood this song until now, as I am separated from my husband. I know the feelings exactly the longing for the perfect love they once shared which later down the line became too routine for him but good for her and so he runs off to live out his fantasies with someone else, despite after all these years knowing each other inside out.
It feels like madness to her that anyone else could know him like she does and that's how I feel, that I could have stolen a few more moments if I hadn't been intent on trying to work out his feelings at the end that maybe I drove him to go. It is perfectly sad and accurate of a relationship where you feel you are still in that couple despite him having left.

Now he is dead and I look back and read these words ...... nothing is forever but I did know him better than anyone else but it was a secret and wrong and ended badly because I couldn't go on so he walked away forever completely...took that baton and ran...

For me this song dedicated to the man she had feelings for but could not be able to be with him. She knows this man for long time but somehow there is a gap between them which both of them could not be together. It could be any reasons. She loves him and adore him and yet the man could not be hers as the man has his own reasons. He wans more reassure more reasons to love somebody. That why if she knows earlier about the man, she might do something differently to convince his love his trust. But yet she was younger that time. Every perfect moment that she wans to be with him always have reason preventing them together and she not giving up hope on him. She knows him well from the day she knew him and yet could not be with him obstacles still in between them. She wait for the playing game as this man is her life and worth to wait.

I believe this song can refer to the authors teenage son, whilst she loves him fiercely, he just wants to pull away as all teenagers do, and in the end she gives him space, to try and reconcile their relationship but he can never be hers because he will eventually marry another. Its a possibility that by pushing too hard, she has done nothing but widen the gap between them and even though he is now an adult, he can barely tolerate his mother. She says she knew from the start? The start of what, Adolescence, his life from the moment he was born? The song also refers to fantasy and freedom, something teenagers spend of time indulging in.

I think this is a great song especially when Whitney and her mom did it, I never really new what it meant until, the man I thought was the love of my life ran off eith someone else. I did everything I thought I could to save us but in the end nothing was enough. The hurtful paet was after awhile he wanted to comeback but it was to late.

I think, the singer wants to say, that she destroyed her big love by wanting too much (for too long). It was perfect, it was fine, but she pushed it too hard, she always wanted more prooves of love. She pushed him emotionally to a wall, didn t let him any room. And he fled. And after some time, with some distance, she realizes all that, that if she had taken it a little bit easier, he would still be there. And they would be happy. But she isn t angry on herself, cause she knows, that at that time, she couldn t have acted different, that things happens the way they do. But she s sad to have lost the person she loves. And even more sad, that it could have worked but she had needed the seperation for understanding him. That she hasn t been ready then for this love. And that now, it s too late. Damn, is it?
