Emeli Sandé – Heaven lyrics
Will you recognize me
In the flashing light?
I try to keep my heart beat
But I can't get it right

Will you recognize me
When I'm lying on my back?
Something's gone inside me
And I can't get it back

Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day it always lasts too long
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day it always lasts too long

Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
[X2]

Will you recognize me
When I'm stealing from the poor?
You're not going to like me,
I'm nothing like before
Will you recognize me
When I lose another friend?
Will you learn to leave me?
Or give me one more try again?

Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day it always lasts too long
Then I'm gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day it always lasts too long

Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
[X2]

Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
[X3]

You say that you're away
I try but always break
'Cause the day always lasts too long

Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone

Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone

Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
Then I'm gone
[X2]

This song is not about addiction. It comes from a point of view from someone who was raised in RELIGION. She expressed like most “we wake with good intentions “ but inevitably and based on biblical prophecies. We fall short of Gods glory.
The song says “ I wake with good intentions”
“ I wait with good intentions”
Religion has taught the sinner is damned, yet we are all sinners.
She struggles with reality and religion!!

I don't think that it is specific to an addiction. Its about everyday sin. Each verse might relate to a different person. The first one could be that stripper or a person who is in the nightlife which we know is surrounded by sin. Laying on the back could be that prostitute. Losing friends could be that drug/alcohol addict. Either way its about falling short. Knowing that you want to be better but struggling to get there because of the daily influences in our society.

I believe this song is talking about a person who is into drugs or who abuses something.
(will you recognize me in the flashing light?) I believe this part means maybe the person has overdoses and they are in the hospital in the E. Are room with all the lights on him.
(i try to keep my heart beat but I can't get it right). This part is probably when the person they are trying to resuscitate the person but it proves difficult.
(will you recognize me when I'm lying on my back?) this is probably when the person is dead in a coffin.
(something's gone inside me and I can't get it back) the person has realized that it was something that led her to this part.
(oh heaven, oh heaven I wake with good intentions but the day it always lasts too long). The person wakes up every day thinking they would stop that addiction but it is very hard, so when they are weak she turns back to it.
(then am gone.) this part is the part were the person has given in to their addiction and the are in their own world.
(will you recognize me will you recognize me when I lose another friend? Will you learn to leave me? Oh, give me one more try again). Because of this addition they are losing friends or the people they care about. The person is asking a friend if they would be forgiven or if they will just accept them back.
(will you recognize me when I'm stealing from the poor) this is when the person in question is trying to feed their addictions by stealing.

It's about addiction - she starts a fresh every day with the intent today will be the day she beats the addiction, but the day seems so long when you crave something, she caves in hence she is "gone" as in off her face. She is lying on her back - not because she's dying because she's wasted, she's seeing flashing lights as she is hallucinating, she's stealing from the poor for her next fix, she's trying to keep her heartbeat as its racing through her body.
It's a plea to god to justify her actions as a drug abuser.

    To me, it appears that in this song, it describes her being addicted to drugs. My reasons come from the following;
I try to keep my heart beat, but I can't get it right. - the drugs possibly having an effect on her body. Will you recognize me when I'm lying on my back. - overdose? Something's gone inside me and I can't get it back. - refering to the innocence, her mind. Oh heaven, oh heaven. - the "happy place" she is released to when taking these drugs. I wake with good intentions, but the day lasts too long. - she doesn't want these drugs, but before long she finds herself taking them. I'm nothing like before. - again, lost to the drugs, not herself. Lose another friend. - self explanatory, the drugs are turning her into someone she's not. People don't like this. Then I'm gone. - to her own "heaven" (she hasn't died in my mind, just been freed to a happier place while on these drugs.)

I like the honesty in this song, she feels that she can never measure up to what she think is the perfection god wants. But the truth is that jesus is always there to pick you up and bring you back. God knows we aren't perfect and sent the answer in jesus, believe in his name, because he died himself to do all that is necessary to get anyone to heaven and back in his arms!

Shes lying on her back, the flashing lights are her life fast forwarding as she fights for her life, shes trying to hang on for her life, but she's in and out and then her heart beat stops. She had good intentions maybe this means, she was once a good girl then she got in with the wrong crowd, became a drug addict hence her stealing from the poor to fund her addiction, heaven is not going to like her because before she was not like this, along the way due to drug addiction she losts friends and says that will heaven give her one last chance, but its too late, she can't wait she needs her fix, her last fix kills her, so she never found out her answers. She was gone, fighting between trying to be the right person, but giving in to her addiction. She waited for heaven with good intentions, but she was too impatient to find out the answer. An amazing song.
