Eva Cassidy – Danny Boy lyrics
Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling.
From glen to glen and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling.
'Tis you, 'tis you must go, and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow.
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow.
Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so.

But when ye come and all the flowers are dying,
And I am dead, as dead I well may be,
Go out and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.

And I will hear tho' soft your tread above me,
And then my grave will warm and sweeter be.
For you shall bend and tell me that you love me,
And I will sleep in peace until you come to me.

I love this song. I think this is speaking of a mother crying that her son is going off to war. The "pipes" in literature are often referring to the call to war. And if he comes back soon she will be there to welcome him. And if he comes back many years later then she will be gone when he comes "as dead I well may be". And he will come and weep by her grave that he did come in time to say goodbye. Yet it will bear a sweetness to him because of how much he loved her. And she will rest in peace when her little "Danny Boy" comes home.

To me the singer is a mother uttering a lament to her son who is emigrating as so many men did. In those days it was unlikely they would ever meet again, but if he ever returns home, she is most likely to have passed away and he will come to her grave and say prayers for the repose of her soul. But such is the love between them, even in death she will recognise him and rest easier for his presence.

This song is so powerful and beautiful. It evokes so many memories of a son going off to war and his father realising that he will not be living when he returns. On a personal note 'danny boy' will always mean so much to the mcmahon family having lost an older brother, who was a true paradox, at the same time complex, unique, creative and who never did things by halves. We will miss you kieran .
