Fastball – The Way lyrics
They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?

They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down they started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?

[Chorus:]
Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They wont make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today, today

The children woke up
And they couldn't find 'em
They left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off and left it all behind 'em
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?

Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They wont make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today, today (repeat)

It's hard to say if this song is about a particular incident but it's certainly sad. A great tune about an ugly subject: people abandoning their children. It's pretty clear. It's also a very odd topic to write a song about but nevertheless they did! Why 50 words are required I'll never know.

The Greatest Road Dog in history died in December. Yogi worked with me in 45 states. He saved my life at least twice and kept me sober for 12 years. I had not heard this song for years but a couple of days after Yogi's death it began to haunt me. I constantly woke with it. It made me smile reflecting on my adventures with Yogi and the smiles he brought to people all over the country. The dimension where Music lives is inexplicable and powerful. I believe Yogi has used this song and this power to reach back and strengthen me. We miss you Yogi. Thank You Music. Thank You Fastball.
