Florence + The Machine – Drumming Song lyrics
There's a drumming noise inside my head
That starts when you're around
I swear that you could hear it
It makes such an all mighty sound

There's a drumming noise inside my head
That throws me to the ground
I swear that you should hear it
It makes such an all mighty sound

Louder than sirens
Louder than bells
Sweeter than heaven
And hotter than hell

I ran to the tower where the church bells chime
I hoped that they would clear my mind
They left a ringing in my ear
But that drum's still beating loud and clear

Louder than sirens
Louder than bells
Sweeter than heaven
And hotter than hell

Louder than sirens
Louder than bells
Sweeter than heaven
And hotter than hell

Louder than sirens
Louder than bells
Sweeter than heaven
And hotter than hell

As I move my feet towards your body
I can hear this beat it fills my head up
And gets louder and louder
It fills my head up and gets louder and louder

I go to the river and dive straight in
I pray that the water will drown out the din
But as the water fills my mouth
It couldn't wash the echoes out
But as the water fills my mouth
It couldn't wash the echoes out

I swallow the sound and it swallows me whole
Till there's nothing left inside my soul
As empty as that beating drum
But the song has just begun

As I move my feet towards your body
I can hear this beat it fills my head up
And gets louder and louder
It fills my head up and gets louder and louder

There's a drumming noise inside my head
That starts when you're around
I swear that you could hear it
It makes such an all mighty sound

There's a drumming noise inside my head
That starts when you're around
I swear that you could hear it
It makes such an all mighty sound

Louder than sirens
Louder than bells
Sweeter than heaven
And hotter than hell

Louder than sirens
Louder than bells
Sweeter than heaven
And hotter than hell

As I move my feet towards your body
I can hear this beat it fills my head up
And gets louder and louder
It fills my head up and gets louder and louder

Think clearly about it, it's about the sound of your own heart, when you get to close to someone you love, especially when your afraid of loving them, not because of violence though sometimes words are like this, but because "true love" is so intense, your heart pounds like hell, and at the very same time it feels like heaven, a drunken ecstasy, have any of you ever been in a "love so deep", that the sound of the drumming is so loud you could pass out from it, the closer you get to them, the louder it always gets, it can be debilitating, even the feeling of being right there, and still a million miles away, "true love" nothing is more intense, not even death, because at least death can end, but real love never ends!

To me this song is about love. The 'drumming noise' that she refers to is the thumping of her heart. It gets louder and louder when that special person is around. Everyone can relate to how when you're nervous or anxious about something your think that your heart is beating loud enough for you to hear it in your head. The "it throws me to the ground" part is about how love can be so overwhelming that it can metaphorically (or physically for that matter) make us stumble. "sweeter than heaven and hotter than hell" is about how love can be so euphoric and amazing (heaven) on one hand and on the other be so destructive and painful (hell).
