Grateful Dead – Uncle John's Band lyrics
Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more,
Cause when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door
.
Think this through with me, let me know your mind,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, is are you kind?

Its a buck dancers choice my friend; better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now and the fire from the ice.
Will you come with me? Wont you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know, will you come with me?

Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?
Their wall are built of cannonballs, their motto is don't tread on me.
Come hear uncle johns band playing to the tide,
Come with me, or go alone, hes come to take his children home.

Its the same story the crow told me; its the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go.
Aint no time to hate, barely time to wait,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?

I live in a silver mine and I call it beggars tomb;
I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune,
Anybodys choice, I can hear your voice.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go
?

Come hear uncle johns band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about, here beside the rising tide.

Come hear uncle johns band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone, hes come to take his children home.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.

Well, I've listened to this song most of my adult life and I'm 66; this may be a meaning that only applies to my generation. Saying that I believe " Well the first days are hardest day, don 't you worry anymore cause when life looks like easy street; there's danger at your door." I believe that to mean that as a child and young adult you believe youi are imervious to pain, danger and death. As you age a multide of obstacles and set backs are surely headed you way. "You know all the rules by now the fire from ice" It would mean that through the years you've grown to know the good from the bad and that would say that you have power to select the right choice. Your life is as brief as the morning sun that turns into the evening wind. We have no time to hate and no time to wait. God has come to call his children home.
