Jack Johnson – All At Once lyrics
All at once,
The world can overwhelm me
There's almost nothing that you could tell me
That could ease my mind

Which way will you run
When it's always all around you
And the feelin' lost and found you again
A feelin' that we have no control

Around the sun
Some say it's going to be the new hell
Some say it's still too early to tell
Some say it really ain't no myth at all

We keep asking ourselves
Are we really strong enough?
There's so many things
That we got too proud of
We're too proud of
We're too proud of

I wanna take the preconceived
Out from underneath your feet
We could shake it off
And instead we'll plant some seeds
We'll watch them as they grow
And with each new beat
From your heart the roots grow deeper
The branches, well they reach for what?

Nobody really knows
But underneath it all
There's this heart all alone
What about when it's gone?
It really won't be so long
Sometimes it feels like a heart
Is no place to be singing from at all

There's a world we've never seen
There's still hope between the dreams
The weight of it all could blow away
With a breeze
But if your waiting on the wind
Don't forget to breathe
Because as the darkness gets deeper
We're sinkin' as we reach for love

At least something we can hold
But I'll reach to you
From where time just can't go
What about when it's gone?
It really won't be so long
Sometimes it feels like a heart
Is no place to be singing from at all

This is about the world around us.
So fucked up and unjust. It causes the suffering that surround us and brings that feeling of sadness and impotence from which we can't escape. And really, it overwhelms me because I feel that I just can't do nothing to make it better. In the last verses jack presents love as maybe the only thing that we can reach out to in order to make us feel better and live trough this dark days.
I've been meditating a bit about this for a few time before earring to the song and I think I really got what he tries to say this time.
Please tell me what you think.

What I love about this song is that I think it captures Jack Johnson in a very confused and sort of frustrated mind set. His emotions throughout the song seem to be up and down. The thought of "planting seeds, roots grow deep, branches reach" is positive. But what is it all for? What's the point to all this? It seems that he wrote the lyrics to this song during a pretty dark time in his life. Maybe something terrible happened; maybe he lost someone or something close to him. I lost my cousin in a vehicle accident days after I bought this album and the words in this song couldn't have matched my emotions more precisely. Though it's kind of saddening, it is such a real feeling; listening to this song; because it brings such a raw emotion that we seem to live our daily lives generally without. And in that sense it's sort of satisfying. That's my interpretation anyways :).

Jack sings to those people who are responsible and accept accountability for their actions; to those who care about the well-being of individuals and humanity worldwide and the environment; to those who are curious and seek confirmation of their purpose; to those who seek opportunity to connect and to make a difference --now or in the future. Jack encourages these people not to get so swept away or so strung out with their lofty goals that they lose themselves. . He reminds [us] to take a breath and appreciate the moment -- a component of which is the experience of a loving relationship.

I don't understand what yall are talking about at all, this song has no hope to it at all. He says to reach out for love and plant seeds to start something new, but what will they reach? Noone knows. Theres still hope between the dreams but the weight of it all could blow away with the breeze? Your sinking as you reach for love. Ill reach for you from where time just can't go. Well where is the one place time can't go? What about when its gone, it really wont be so long. And still in the end, the heart is no place to be singing from at all. I see no hope in this song. Just over coming it anyway. Without pain without sacrifice we would have nothing. Its only once youve lost everything your free to do anything. This song seems to speak that.

Jack sings to those people who are highly responsible and accept accountability for their actions; to those who care about the well being of individuals and humanity worldwide and the environment; to those who are curious and seek confirmation of their purpose, their opportunity to connect and to make a difference --now or with future. Jack encourages these people not to get so swept away or so strung out with these lofty goals that they lose themselves. He reminds them to take a breath and appreciate the moment.

There could be many metaphors for the lyrics to this song, but knowing Jack and his personal commitment to improve the environment, I think this is more literally about the destruction of the Earth. Climate change continues to occur even though some people refuse to believe it. As an individual, even our greatest efforts attempting to reverse this feels overwhelming and at times futile. So in the end, we realize all we know for certain is the present and love.

I think the earlier post about the felling of loss pervades this song and throughout the album is spot on. Jack lost his cousin, Danny during the making of the album. Jack has said he was close with his cousin and took it pretty hard. Pretty hard to make sense of things when a young person passes on too early. Just my take. I think Jack doesn’t mind what people take from his songs…just wants to touch people’s hearts. Cheers.

This song is kinda thematic to my life. It always seems to be out of my control and I never seem to have any say in what happens to me. My parents divorce and I have to do what I can't to please both of them. Then my bf cheats on me with my sister and I have to put on this front that says I'm okay. But I'm not. And then today I find out my dad is taking a job 2. 5 hours away from home so he will never be home during the week. And the changes just never stop. All at once. The world can overwhelm you. And underneath it all, theres this heart all alone. And now my heart doesn't seem like a place to be singing from. Cuz my heart is so full of ache and is scarred. But maybe, theres still hope. This song gives me some of that hope.
