It was 1968 and my girlfriend decided in the summer that we were getting too serious and broke our relationship off. I was devastated and even to this day still feel the pain of a love lost. I was at a party in 1969 and someone said you have to listen to this Jefferson Airplane on the new stereo headphones. I did and will always remember the feelings that this particular song had on me. I will always associate it with my hopes then, that she would come back to me sometime, but now I have grown old and know that it will not happen. I still feel that sorrow and like the lyric, I wish it hadn't begun.

I think the you is love or the idea of being in love. He wants love to come back to him. Perhaps he's put to much into past loves and he wants that feeliing to come back. I love the line " i wish it hadn't begun" because he's talked himself into being in love and knows deep down it's not real or the " feeling" will leave. You is love not a person. It could be anyone and probably several people and people yet to come.
