Jennifer Lawrence – The Hanging Tree lyrics
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man
They say who murdered three.
Strange things
did happen here
No stranger would it seem
If we met up at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you
, are you
Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out
For his love to flee.
Strange things did happen
here
No stranger would it seem
If we met up at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run,
So we'd both be free.
Strange things did happen here
No
stranger would it seem
If we met up at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to
the tree
Wear a necklace of rope,
Side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would
it seem
If we met up at midnight
In the hanging tree.

I have to disagree with the above reviewer.
This is a song about 2 lovers who are alive but have lost all hope. They have chosen to die together in order to be together. It is a sad, depressing and morose story and there is no strength in choosing to die when there is another way out if the problems you face. The two lovers hope to be able to be together as lovers after their death in a way that has been denied them in life. They have chosen to die together in this place where justice has been dispensed, as though they are making a statement to the community that their love is just and should not have been forbidden. They could have chosen to end their lives anywhere they wanted but they chose the community Hanging Tree; the symbol of justice for their town. This may also have been the only place they knew they would not be disturbed; possibly having met there previously when no other place was safe for them to be together.

I know there are situations in which death seems preferable to life - those dying from incurable cancer for example - but it is so hard to see people - often young people - who are willing to throw away the gift of their lives in fits of depression. It is difficult to listen to this song without tears welling up and Miss Lawrence has a beautifully haunting voice. The uncertainty with which her voice cracks as she sings portrays the seriousness and the emotional turmoil of what the lovers are contemplating. Her voice and the lyrics evoke strong, passionate emotions in just about anyone with a heartbeat and play well into the scenes form the movie in which multitudes of rebels sacrifice themselves in order to combat the better armed Capitol Peace Keepers.

If you have read this far, then you must be interested so I will close with this: Fighting through the bad times is what makes us appreciate the good times; giving up and giving in to depression is a harmful and often selfish act. Take it from someone who has battled depression nearly all of my life; don't give in! Find a way to beat it!

This whole song is basically about a dead guy asking his lover to hang herself next to him. But it has a deeper meaning. Maybe she was sentenced to death also, and he wanted to make it easier for her, knowing he is waiting. But this song is a vibrance of power and hope to the living. Something about not fearing death kinda makes you a bit stronger.
