Jimmy McCarthy – Bright Blue Rose lyrics
I skimmed across black water, without once submerging
Onto the banks of an urban morning
That hungers the first light, much much more
Than mountains ever do
.

And she like a ghost beside me, goes down with the ease of a dolphin
And emerges unlearned, unshamed, unharmed
For she is the perfect creature, natural in every feature
And I am the geek with the alchemists'
stone.

Chorus

For all of you who must discover,
For all who seek to understand,
For having left the path of others
You find a very special hand
.

And it is a holy thing, and it is a precious time
And it is the only way
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

Chorus

For all of you who must discover
For all who seek to understand,
For having left the path of others
You find a very special hand.

And it is a holy thing
And it is the only way
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

One bright blue rose outlives all those
Two thousand years and still it goes
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

For me this song is nothing to do with depression, guilt, suicide or religion. It's an uplifting song of hope and joy.
It's the sun skimming across the surface of the water then hitting the city buildings that light up like gold. It's the sun that is the geek with the alchemist's stone, turning everything to gold. As the sun comes up, it's the moon that goes down with the ease of a dolphin as it sinks into the sea, the perfect creature, natural in every feature.
It's a song about the natural wonders of earth, about spirituality. Thank you Jimmy McCarthy for this beautiful song that never fails to give me goose bumps.

To me it's about the suicide of his beloved (and she like a ghost beside me, goes down with the ease of a dolphin, and emerges unlearned, unashamed, unharmed... purified and released?), whilst he is left dying the slow death of loss of self after experiencing the enormity of his possible guilt for her pain and suffering. In desperation, he discovers another path (one of understanding), finally finding his way back to healing through holiness and acceptance. Not only very catholic, but very human indeed! Beautiful message, beautiful air / lament.

To me this is about him coming back to God after realising he needed the guidance of Jesus in his life. He had spent many years as an engineer/scientist but realised he was wrong and his ‘unlearned’ lover was right. He had a very disturbed night while his partner slept peacefully, because of her faith.

I think of the black waters as the difficult times in life and the depression that goes with them. But that each time we come through it and sometimes we wonder how. Each time we come through it is a new morning, fresh with what spiritual lesson we have learned from the experience, each of them shaping us into God's perfect version of ourselves. Life is full of loves and losses, all teaching us lessons, when we lose someone then someone new might arrive on our path or simply when we turn to God for comfort. I think 'She like a ghost beside me, goes down with the ease of a dolphin' is someone hitting a rock bottom or a dark night of the soul then emerging from it refreshed spiritually. 'She is the perfect creature, natural in every feature', We are all perfect in god's eyes, seen as our natural authentic selves. I believe the song is about the strength of the soul on the beautiful crazy painful rollercoaster that we call life. 'Forget me nots among the snow', could mean that deep down we always remember our Creator even when we think we don't but especially the cold hard times (snow), but this has it's own meaning for me because a lot of my most treasured memories of loved ones are in snow, so that's personal and I'm a hopeless romantic, absolutely beautiful, touching song that moves you to the core. Thanks for reading.

What a lot of bullshit about a lovely song ,
From a genius , I’ve heard it all now ,
Religion has nothing to do with anything,
Stop citing religious tripe as if it were legitimate,
( it’s not) prove what you believe ,
Or be quiet please , ( you idiot) are you one of those stupid people who believe everything they read and hear
, do research and try to find out what is true ,

its about a young man who has decided to join the priesthood. To sacrifice everything for the religous life. This would I think follow the lyricist life experience as he spent time in a religous institution. It always reminds me of people swimming in the early morning in Cork harbour.

Black water is depression skimming over means not getting to far down she like a ghost beside me is our blessed mother she is a perfect creature natural in every feature, he is the geek with the alchemist stone he has the power to change himself into a better person leaving the path of others, not being like the crowd who think it's alright to commit sin.

This is a thoroughly Christian experience. Black water is depression or some other tough life experience. The urban morning is an awakening and hunger for the light of Christ. 'She' is the Holy Spirit walking (or swimming) beside me. And only the holy way, the special time, can save me. Two thousand years and so it goes, we are still trying to figure it out.

Its Irish, its about guilt & religion, Its about leaving the path that religion takes us on and sinning, its about finding that path again and enjoying the glory of that path & not feeling guilty. Yep, hard catholic guilt, it'll get you every time. Lovely air though, could listen to it all day.

Lost love. Depression. No peace day or night. Thoughts never leave. Can't understand believe or accept. Suicidal. Looking for answers but can't find. Turn to God .only hope. Only hope that stops you from unending pain. Later reflect. Changed you as a person. Now reflecting. Seeing yourself anew but carrying the pain from that time. Life goes on but you are now a passenger.

I think it is about taking the hand of "The Bright Blue Rose" (Mary the perfect woman) in faith and being led to eternal life in her son, Jesus, who died for us 2,000 years ago. Being a scientist, or indeed anything this world has to offer, can not satisfy our deep, ingrained yearning to be with God. Lack of faith is akin to swimming in dark waters with nothing to guide us to our true home in Heaven.

My first impression was: a human male fell in love with a fae woman, she mourns him still. Do immortals gave regrets? Aye, and too much time to ponder them. (I need 50 words? Really? But I already said all that I needed to. Still not fifty? How about now?)

The song for me is about lost love or addiction and recovery through spirituality. It's similar in its tone to the serenity prayer. I skimmed across the black morning can be addiction or not seeing the early signs of a breakup. urban morning is waking up with a hangover or following a blackout due to alcohol or without a lost love. "She" can be a love that is lost and carries without on with life without the pain the composer's feels on or alcohol goes down with the ease of a dolphin. The with all recoveries its time and redemption his through Jesus and pondering on Jesus suffering for the composer's and our redemption. And so goes the story for eternity of loss and redemption through suffering.

He has been awake all night ,due to guilt, regrets, worries etc. Beside him is his wife(child?) who gone down (to sleep) because of her unblemished innocence "with grace of dolphin". He then reflects on our human dillemma: we are inclined to evil and choose to follow wrongly the path of others because of fear of losing their respect. Often these choices cause us to lose our way. He reflects on hungering for the light, and then those deceased souls who who have
emerged from the snow of death are saints and shine forth with our Lord. The Bright Blue Rose represents, in Catholic Tradition, the color of Our Blessed Mother who intercedes for us since Christ's birth 2000 yeaqrs ago.
