Johnny Paycheck – Old Violin lyrics
Well, I can't recall, one time in my life,
I've felt as lonely as I do tonight.
I feel like I could lay down, and get up no more,
It's the damndest feelin'; I never felt it before.

Tonight I feel like an old violin,
Soon to be put away and never played again.
Don't ask me why I feel like this, hell, I can't say.
I only wish this feelin' would just go away.

I guess it's 'cos the truth,
Is the hardest thing I ever faced.
'Cos you can't change the truth,
In the slightest way. I tried.

So I asked myself,
I said: 'John, where do you go from here?'
Then like a damned fool,
I turned around and looked in the mirror.

And there I saw, an old violin.
Soon to be put away and never played again.

So one more time, just to be sure,
I said: 'John, where in the hell do you go from here?'
You know that when a nickel's worth of beer,
When I looked in the mirror, that's when I knew.

That there I was seein', an old violin.
Soon to be put away, and never played again.

And just like that, it hit me,
That old violin and I were just alike.
We'd give our all to music,
And soon, we'll give our life.

My wife and I have had 54+ wonderful years of marriage. Fourteen years ago I began to notice changes. We went through the first six stages of Alzheimer's Disease together. She is now in a nursing facility, no longer recognizes me, and one stage remains. I am still in good health, active and have the capacity to do many things (travel, hike, work, love). I've accepted her illness as terminal but have difficulty accepting a future of loneliness without a companion. I need a friend and, like the song says, "I tried." My daily struggles are expressed in the Old Violin. This song says it all.

I think he wrote this song while he was in a very depressed state of mind and he was spilling his heart out but just not with words that describe his hurt in his heart so he used a violin to describe the meaning of everything. I personally love this song and its a very sad song but everytime I hear it puts a smile on my face and I can't stop singin it.

I believe he was realizing that at sometime in the future all things come to an end. And so would he. Time marches on and there is nothing that any of us can do about it. It is hard to age and to realize that your life is coming to an end and that no matter what you had accomplished in life, you can't get it all done. I love this song! I would like thank him for all the musical enjoyment he has given us. Rest in peace John, we miss you.

To me this is a song about a guy who is so depressed and lonely.
He has devoted his life to music and like the an old violin it is put away and never used again. He’s at the end of his life and while he is still alive his spirit is slowly fading as he prepares for death. I’m assuming this is an autobiographical song and about as sad as it gets. He is realizing that he spent his life making music but like an old violin he is being put away to slowly die. He is still here but physically but not being used for what he was made to do.

To me it sounds like an old man who refuses to realize he's getting old and finally admits it to himself. He also realizes that his end is near and he would soon be put away just like the old violin. He also realizes what he has dedicated his life to (music) and he and the old violin are so similar.

He was at his lowest point in his life- so depressed and sad that his life’s purpose was over. Johnny devoted his entire life to music and he came to a point in his life that singing was no more and like an old violin he was going to be put away and not play anymore. He had lots of precious memories of a life devoted to music but it was ending. A beautiful song about the end of life.
