Judy Collins – Albatross lyrics
The lady comes to the gate dressed in lavender and leather
Looking North to the sea she finds the weather fine
She hears the steeple bells ringing through the orchard
All the way from town
She watches seagulls fly
Silver on the ocean stitching through the waves
The edges of the sky
Many people wander up the hills
From all around you
Making up your memories and thinking they have found you
They cover you with veils of wonder as if you were a bride
Young men holding violets are curious to know if you have cried
And tell you why
And ask you why
Any way you answer
Lace around the collars of the blouses of the ladies
Flowers from a Spanish friend of the family
The embroid'ry of your life holds you in
And keeps you out but you survive
Imprisoned in your bones
Behind the isinglass windows of your eyes
And in the night the iron wheels rolling through the rain
Down the hills through the long grass to the sea
And in the dark the hard bells ringing with pain
Come away alone
Even now by the gate with you long hair blowing
And the colors of the day that lie along your arms
You must barter your life to make sure you are living
And the crowd that has come
You give them the colors
And the bells and wind and the dream
Will there never be a prince who rides along the sea and the mountains
Scattering the sand and foam into amethyst fountains
Riding up the hills from the beach in the long summer grass
Holding the sun in his hands and shattering the isinglass?
Day and night and day again and people come and go away forever
While the shining summer sea dances in the glass of your mirror
While you search the waves for love and your visions for a sign
The knot of tears around your throat is crystallizing into your design
And in the night the iron wheels rolling through the rain
Down the hills through the long grass to the sea
And in the dark the hard bells ringing with pain
Come away alone
Come away alone... With me.

Judy recently revealed in her podcast that it was written about Joan Baez! I read in Collins' biography that it was about a spoiled, wealthy, lesbian artist who owned fancy estate by the sea. Didn't match up to Baez, which she now claims. Mysterious and haunting lyrics that are difficult to decipher.

Rediscovered this great song, still perfectly sums up a wistful mood. Think 'isinglass' is appropriate at the end, referring back to 'the isinglass windows of your mind' which would be shattered by the prince, thereby allowing freedom and clearer access to the world, maybe? Isinglass may derive from fish slime but my understanding is it was made into rigid mica like substance used as simple screens.
First listened to this in my late teens, but just as good now years later, in fact better with more attention to the lyrics.

Possibly the most beautiful lyrical song I have ever heard. However, I question the transcription of the last word in the quote below.
"Will there never be a prince who rides along the sea and the mountains.
Scattering the sand and foam into amethyst fountains.
Riding up the hills from the beach in the long summer grass.
Holding the sun in his hands and shattering the isinglass? "
Isinglass is a form of fish-slime, as far as I can tell. Just too visceral to end this gush of imagery. But then what would it be? My choice is "icy blast," as in "Holding the sun in his hands and shattering the icy blast.".

Isinglass is indeed a solid substance which was used for carriage windows as it was safer than glass. It also occurs in the song from "Oklahoma!" ("The Surrey With The Fringe On Top") in the line: "With isinglass windows you can roll right down, In case there's a change in the weather."

Love her voice and her songs, mostly the ones that are not so famous: Houses, Tawathie, My Father, Anathea. Her voice is like a crystal bell and her songs are poetry as songs should be. Nobody writes or sings songs like that anymore except maybe Jewel but you don’t even hear anything about her either anymore.

Every time i hear this beautiful piece of work still it rips my heart. I don’t know why she titled it albatross but i have always thought she was writing about herself. It is the life of someone who is famous, who longs for someone who is a companion. The universal meaning to me is that it is also about someone for whom shyness is a cage/fence against the world that cannot be opened. She comes to the gate to look and interact but she doe not open it. Her loneliness is profound and she dreams of a “prince” who can rescue her from her prison. People try to pry into her world to find out the private meanings of her work and she lets them believe whatever they wish (which is pretty typical of artists ) so i don’t really credit what she says it means or at least take it with a grain of salt. It is an achingly gorgeous song and poem.
