Kid Cudi – Pursuit Of Happiness lyrics
Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up, take a hit
Feelin' lit, feelin' light, 2 A. M., summer night.
I don't care, hand on the wheel,
Drivin' drunk, I'm doin' my thing

Rollin in the Midwest side and out,
Livin' my life, getting' out dreams
People told me slow my roll,
I'm screaming out, fuck that
Imma do just what I want,
Lookin' ahead no turnin' back
If I fall, If I die,
Know I lived it to the fullest,
If I fall, if I die,
Know I lived and missed some bullets

Chorus:
I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know,
Everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold
I'll be fine, once I get it, I'll be goooood.
I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know,
Everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold
I'll be fine, once I get it, I'll be goooood.

Tell me what you know about dreamin' (dreamin')
You don't really know about nothin' (nothin')

Tell me what you know about them night terrors, every night
5 A. M, cold sweats wakin' up, to the sky
Tell me what you know about dreams, dreams
Tell me what you know about night terrors, nothin'
You don't really care about the trials of tomorrow
Rather lay awake in a bed full of sorrow

Chorus:
I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know,
Everything that shines ain't always gonna be gold
I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be goooood.

I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know,
Everything that shines ain't always gonna be gold, hey
I'll be fine once I get it, yeah, I'll be good

I'm on the pursuit of happiness
And I know everything that shines ain't always gonna be gold, hey
I'll be fine once I get it, yeah
I'll be good

Pursuit of happiness, yeah.
I don't get it, I'll be good

Ugh.
Ah, man,
Ugh, ayite, ugh
Room's spinnin'. Room's spinnin'.
Matt... Zulie... Wait.
Oh my god why did I drink so much and slug so much?, ah
Ugh, fuck.

I have to completely disagree with you foreverme. You are reading way to far into this song, its not an anti-drinking and driving song. This song is about going through a weird stage of life while you are trying to figure out whats important and who you are. Its about not giving a f*k and doing exactly what you want to whether its going out and getting fucked up or whatever it is with a disregard for the consequences. It may be selfish but its something some people go through, and it doesn't sound like you have gone through that.
This song speaks to me like no other lyrics have before. It sums up life right now for me and I know that things will be fine and this isn't a permanent thing.

This is a great song because it's so self-aware. It's about being on a road to self-immolation, knowing it, and telling the world "fuck that/Imma do just what I want". The first few lines are about boozing - "Drivin' drunk, I'm doin' my thing" - and smoking crack - "Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up, take a hit" on a summer's night. The singer knows this lifestyle will result in him burning out too fast, "People told me slow my roll", but he doesn't care about the "trials of tomorrow". At the heart of it is the emptiness the singer feels - the "pursuit of happiness" and the irony that "once I get it, I'll be good" - but this drug-induced "happiness" will only last until "5 a.m, cold sweats wakin' up, to the sky" when the withdrawal symptoms kick in, and over-indulgence is self-desctructive, "Oh my god why did I drink so much and slug so much? Ah/Ugh, fuck". Short term thrills allow him to escape the reality that "everything that shines ain't always gonna be gold", the decadence of his world which he knows is futile and not true happiness but isn't he "Livin' my life, getting' out dreams", "lived life to the fullest"? Awesome song - conflicted and angry, at the world and bitterly ironic towards himself.

Basically the first verse of this song is one man's interpretation of what living life is all about. Getting high, getting drunk, and not giving a damn about anything he has done or choices he has made. He is on the pursuit of happiness. The second verse of this song is basically just a complete counter argument to the first man's lifestyle. The first verse reads "driving drunk, i'm doing my thang, livin my life, getting out my dreams" where as the second verse says "tell me what you know about dreamin.. You don't know about nothin" the chorus itself is in the perspective of the first man, "i'm on the pursuit of happiness" is referring to living life in a destructive way in order to achieve happiness. The second man is ignoring all consequences and doing whatever he wants to because happiness is just going to come to him. This is proven at the end of the song when the last line of the chorus goes from "ill be fine once i get it, yeah ill be good," to "i don't get it, ill be good", showing the ignorance of the first man, and the way he chooses to live his life. Its good to see some positive ideas in rap/hip hop culture, too bad not every rapper/hip hop artist could be as insightful as this guy.

I don't think this song is about self-awareness at all, I think it's about someone so unaware of themselves they think they have it all figured out. Someone so behind they think they're first!
I do think the song is about a life-style that is out of control and that person just not willing to admit they are in trouble. The song is not a happy one at all, it's about denial!

This is one of my favorite songs. It's about how a guy who drinks a lot gets into his car without thinking of what might happen when he wakes fully sober the next day. When people tell him he's not doing the right thing, he just shrugs it off and continues to do his own thing. Then in the 2nd verse of the song, someone is telling him that he doesn't know a thing of what's to come later on, that he'll regret everything later on when he's lying in bed in the middle of the night, full of guilt.
