This song will always be a favorite of mine. I got an copy of the original capitol records orange and yellow swirl label from my mom's friend in 1971 when I was only in first grade. I played that record many times and still play the same copy today, though only for nostalgic reasons since I do have a cd copy. This song opened up my love and facination for the japanese and wider asian culture. I dreamed of having a japanese man lover. I still do. And when I see a couple walking hand in hand and one of them is a handsome asian male, I cry but "look up... So the tears won"t fall. "

Billyb. Yes, you are correct. Kyu is "nine" in japanese. But, do you really think his father wasn't able to think of another name? (just giving some "fun" with you. No offense intended.) It's a shame that the name of the song was created to "sell" the song in the us. Sukiyaki is a japanese food (my mother used to prepare for us on special days.) The song has nothing to do with eating (lol.) The song is a love song from the man's view. He says "When I walk, I do with my head hi (or looking up) so it's harder for the tears to run down my face." I remember that's what my mom told me. Anyway, beautiful song. Great memories. Enjoy!

I remember hearing this as a child when my dad had a big reel to reel recorder, then I saw an american ww2 film which included a storyline about a young hawaiian serving on a submarine. He sang the song and was later killed by another crew member who didn't trust him. Can't remember the name of the film. But the song reflected the lives of the japanese americans who were interned during the war.
