Lana Del Rey – Born To Die lyrics
Feet don't fail me now
Take me to the finish line
Oh my heart it breaks every step that I take
But I'm hoping at the gates
They'll tell me that your mine

Walking through the city streets
Is it by mistake or design
I feel so alone on a friday night
Can you make it feel like home
If I tell you you're mine

It's like I told you honey

Don't make me sad
Don't make me cry
Sometimes love is not enough
And the road gets tough I don't know why

Keep making me laugh
Lets go get high
The road is long we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime

Come take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane

Choose your last words
This is the last time
Because you and I
We were born to die

Lost but now I am found
I can see but once I was blind
I was so confused as a little child
Trying to take what I could get
Scared that I couldn't find

All the answers honey

Don't make me sad
Don't make me cry
Sometimes love is not enough
And the road gets tough I don't know why

Keep making me laugh
Lets go get high
The road is long we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime

Come take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane

Choose your last words
This is the last time
Because you and I
We were born to die

We were born to die
We were born to die

Come take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane

Don't make me sad
Don't make me cry
Sometimes love is not enough
And the road gets tough I don't know why

Keep making me laugh
Lets go get high
The road is long we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime

Come take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane

Choose your last words
This is the last time
Because you and I
We were born to die

We were born to die...

Well, when I first heard the song I didn't understand it at all. Now that I've looked up the lyrics, seen the video and read most of the first 50 comments, I feel that this song starts off as if Lana thinks she's in the best relationship and the guy she's with is the love of her life. In the second verse when she says she was lost but now found, I think she's finally realizing that she has made a mistake in her relationship and is having second thoughts. In the ending of the song she keeps repeating 'we were born to die' so she is trying to say to the guy that she wants to breakup, but he is saying 'no' and keeps urging her on until finally they breakup (and it's the end of the video where the dude is holding the bloody body of Lana) .

When she says 'we we're born to die', I take it to mean the relationship was doomed from the start. We can be powerfully attracted to the wrong people for all the wrong reasons. Doesn't stop us from going there but there is always a feeling of doomed inevitability in these situations which this song wallows in. I love the register of her voice, this song could not be sung by everyone.

Babe, you're bummed out on life, sounds like you're only here to party with no direction known. Downer, martyrs-ville. Obvious hopelessness, no future, just doom, here to get some, get high and fade away? Don't be that way. We are born to die, but what most can't see is we are reborn in death and live on as our prime, unflawed spiritual selves with our loved ones eternally. This mortal life is just a quick moment in time, live it full and happily-spiritual life goes on afterward-you'll see! Cheer up be uplifting and make positive vibes, dudette, don't be so dark and down. You are a beautiful person inside and out and your poetry and music is heavy duty. You have class, don't sleaze out on us, be your real self like you are, beautiful and humble and demure. Continue to be you and don't become a spectacle or carnival act raise people up girl. Love, from a twice your age. New, very impressed fan from the nw ps blue jeans is a killer, makes me feel where you are-someone else is out there and will be lucky to win you- sorry for my two cents. Keep on girl, you're great!

This is quite clear. Its written from the perspective of a girl with borderline personality disorder. Reference to lost child, taking what I could get etc.
Love isn't enough, doesn't know why she's sad. Its a long road to recovery, and its so important to her to have fun, to laugh,.
Don't make me cry - borderlines cannot feel emotion, they are scared of feeling emotion. She says the right things to her partner "if i tell you that your mine" but still cannot feel happy/secure/at home.
"you like your girls insane" reference to herself.
This song is heartbreaking, for there are so many who are loved but never feel it, always try to destroy it.

She is in a relationship that she knew from the start would never work out, she remembers all the good things they have but inevitably knows the relationship will never work out even though she wants him so bad. She talks about the courage she needs to hurt the one she loves so much and break his heart in a nutshell their relationship was born to die. (much like whats happening with me at the moment) :(

I think this song has an almost haunting message, of trust, ways of getting over problems, and hope that she'll find somebdoy to not make her cry, and not make her sad. It expresses the inportance of someone being there for her that she rely on, and I think the video shows that she does need somebody of whome she feels safe with, and someone who she would like to grow old with in order for her to live her life. She's wants to stand at the pearly gates and be accepted by god. She is describing how lonely the walk of spirituality is. Most of the time spiritual people don't feel like we are of this earth but have to walk in it. She continually admonishes us that one day we will die. What are you living for right now. She even uses the words to another spiritual song amazing grace to explain that now she understands her purpose in life is to get back to god.

The song is about a sort of turbulent love that you know right from the start is, well, for lack of a better word, doomed. But even so, knowing how risky the relationship is, the couple carry on. And the girl is saying "lets just make the best out of this. Let's try to make it as painless and fun as can be because I love you. But you and I both know this won't last.

It's about being with someone, and you know it can't last. So you enjoy it while you can. She's trying to tell him "don't make me sad or blue, coz love gets tough, keep making me laugh and we'll go out and have fun while we're waiting for our love to die. But before our love dies come and walk on the wild side, and go abit insane. But tell me you love me now, as your last words because we're not going to last. "
But being in love with someone dangerous, means your going to get hurt. "you and i, we were born to die" .

Born to die is a fact of life which people do not give much thought to. I look at my child while listening to her saying we are born to die and it daunts on me the reality of our human condition. Who am I to decide his life for him? Who am I to say how he should live his life? All I can do is hope is before he dies, he lives a very fullfilling life because we are born to die.

Sometimes you have to be crazy to let yourself fall for someone you know it'll never work with. It tends to happen to a lot of us in life. Unintentionally. And sometimes, the desperation of our love drives us to go out of our way to cling to these hopes and illusions of a possible happy ending when in fact. There isn't one. Coming to terms with that reality can make us feel so alone. Even as we're surrounded by others. Life & love are both so very profound.

I know exactly what this song is about. The ongoing guess fest is killing me. So ill keep my explaination at that, take it as you will. Its a story of a girl that has very low self esteem, never knowing if its good enough even to the bitter end(I'm hoping at the gates, they'll tell me that your mine). Created love, as in she forced it or chance love (mistake or design). 'don't make me sad. Don't make me cry' is used to refer a warning, feeling like no matter how small a fight or issue in the relationship it will always drive this girl to run making the self distructive mind cause the end. She knows she is this way that's why she says "sometimes love is not enough, the road gets rough i dont know why" and refers to her in childhood being confused and taking what she could get(grasping for love basically that always ended in heartache causing her self distructiveness). Also getting "high" refers to basic distractions from the thing that they both know will end the relationship, like everyone does in relationships. And "have fun in the meantime" tells the listener that she is set in her negative mindset. Also another big thing people seem to ask is what "born to die" really means. Not litterally death. It refers to the end of the relationship. "we were born to die"
This is my job, I write music for a living and I know this song personally. Thanks for reading!

I think the meaning of the song is that love is eternal, even after death, nothing can make it stop, not even death.
It could also mean that you and I were supposed 2 grow old together, and then die. I personally love the way lana shows all the emotions and her reference 2 heaven could show she uses religious imagery 2 show her innocence by wearing a white dress and blue flowers, representing peace, death.
This is my favourite song. She's just so elegant n modest, because unlike rihanna, (even though I admire rihanna) she doesn't reveal lots of skin. Her voice also sounds so elegant and majestic.
Over all it's an amazing song and has an amazing meaning. I love her 4 this. I also love how it evolves in a circle (the vid - they show them holding each other at the end and the beginning. At the end this refers back to the meaning, that they want to be together eternally because their love is forever.

I think that she's ending a destructive yet addicting relationship with some guy who's a real jerk but he keeps on showing tiny signs of sweetness which is why she stays even though he never improves. But now she has had enough of his crap and is willing to move on.
And in the end she knows that this relationship was born to die. And this sort of like the one who got away. Most probably they have some sort of really sad ending like one of them dying.

It seems to me that, while, at face value, the song may initially connote a meaning that lends itself to a nihilistic approach to love and indeed life, the message that is created in light of this idea is one that is entirely different: she pleads with her lover to grasp the opportunity of love that presents itself to him. "we were born to die" ultimately implores the subject (as well as the listener) to profit from the limited and uncontrollable margin of time we inherently possess as human beings in order to enrich our lives with the joy that love can occur between us. For me, it seems that, while the focus may seem to lay with death, she also implies that if a love is meant to continue, death will be no obstacle, for they will reunite either in the afterlife, to speak literally, or that the reunion will exist in the idea of an unchangeable series of events of their love that the past possesses. Very intelligent, truly touching lyrics.

In my opinion, I think the song represents lana's happiness with her partner. She knows that life gets hard ('the road gets tough') so the must always look on the bright side of life and must have a positive attitude to get through it ('try to have fun in the meantime'). I think the overall message of the song is happiness and shows the love between her and her partner and reminds us that life is short so try to live life to the full.

Her relationship with the person she thought was made for her, isn't as perfect as it seemed in the beginning, and with every moment she is reminded that no matter how sure she is that he is the one, he just isn't. Hence the words "born to die", theyre reaching an end and shes trying to live life and their love to the fullest before it fails. The maaacha x

We are not eternal, so while we are buzzing we might as well try and figure out what to do. I have an idea; why not try to find some normality in an insane person like me? Be careful, as handsome as I am, one slip and you're gone. Basically this song is about finding kicks and being persistently up there knowing fully that the ground is not too far behind. It's full of inconsistencies that move you and make this woman one of the talented singers out there.

Holy crap you people are embarrassing. I hear this utter trash written by someone who sounds like they are in middle school, and of course, there are tons of people discussing how sad and powerful it is. Seriously? Life gets tough I don't know why? Keep making me laugh let's go get high the road is long we carry on let's have fun in the meantime? Is it by mistake or by design? You like your girls insane? . Pretty much that entire first stanza?
    Jesus, just pathetic. Cmon people.

I think she remembers the past times she had with her boyfriend, she says the she was felling confused when she was younger and thought that she really loved him, but that was just an ilusion, she only wanted it because it was dangerous, she now realisez. She was also afraid to let go because she thought that she could never find someone better. Though she ended that, perhaps, relationship, she remembers him now and then (when he is beside her in bed).

I agree with those who have said this song is about a love that can't last and has to die but I also feel like this song probably relates to what a lot of young people just finding their feet in life feel; insecurity and want to find someone who can make them feel safe and protected from life's blows, as they are unsure of themselves and what lies in the future. This song really speaks to me in that way and I think the imagery in both the lyrics and the tone of the song add so much to make this a very meaningful song.
