Laurie Lewis – Who Will Watch The Home Place lyrics
Leaves are falling and turning to showers of gold
As the postman climbs up our long hill
And there's sympathy written all over his face
As he hands me a couple more bills

Who will watch the home place
Who will tend my hearts dear space
Who will fill my empty place
When I am gone from here

There's a lovely green nook by a clear-running stream
It was my place when I was quite small
And it's creatures and sounds could soothe my worst pains
But today they don't ease me at all

In my grandfather's shed there are hundreds of tools
I know them by feel and by name
And like parts of my body they've patched this old place
When I move them they won't be the same

Now I wander around touching each blessed thing
The chimney the tables the trees
And my memories swirl 'round me like birds on the wing
When I leave here oh who will I be

Is song describes my parents home place to the tee. They lived on 2/12 acres with a stream running through the property. My dad had a shop on the property with hundreds of tools that he used to make a living to support the family and help build the home. The house had a fireplace with a chimmey and the property was full of trees When they passed away, I played this song at their funerals. When I sold the homeplace and moved the tools they were not the same. Nothing is.

I learned this quickly with my son on guitar, me on vocals and fiddle ,for my grandmas funeral. She was nearly 102. Afterwards my aunt said it was nice; I should sing country or something. I chuckled inside for I’d been in a bluegrass/ country band for years. When performed, a hush comes over, then solemnity, as I sing it, and many compliments. I knew when it affected me, it would be a great song. I was honored to hear Laurie sing it at Minnehaha Falls Festival. Great song.
