Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple Man lyrics
(Gary Rossington - Ronnie Vanzant)

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It'll help you some sunny day. Oh Yah!
Oh, take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
You'll find a woman, yea yea, you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

[Chorus:]
And be a simple, kind of man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man.
Oh, won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust, for the rich man's gold
All that you need, is in your soul,
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

[Chorus:]

Boy, don't you worry... You'll find yourself.
Follow your heart, lord, and nothing else.
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

[Chorus:]

Baby be a simple, be a simple man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man. (Fade out)

I feel this song expresses a understanding of how the simplest things in life are whats important. Its singing a sweet lullaby to that includes a soft understanding of comfort to the trials of life. Sometimes we look in the wrong places for happiness and love and satisfaction. And sometimes we fail, but we must know in our soul that everything we ever needed is actually right before us. Have faith and believe.

All my teenage years were through the 70's. I would be rich if I got a dime every time I've heard this song. So, I chose this song, for my only child, and son's wedding back in 2011. (the mother/son dance). Didn't tell anyone what song I picked. No one asked. I felt it was just perfect to express my proud feelings for him. When the dance was over, there were lot's of tears and some sobbing going on in the crowd. I raised him with no father in sight. He never heard song before. Very touching.

I was getting ready this morning to go to court supporting my youngest son and heard this song. It was so touching and it calmed me down and meant so much more to me- It meant that God- The Holy Spirit is present in our lives and to trust and walk in His light, as a mother of two young men struggling to find their way I will write these deeply written lyrics down and give them both a copy along with prayers for their lives and all the lives that they will encounter each precious day here on earth. Thank you song writers and singers...

This song was played at my brothers funeral after his overdose. I picked it out ad Lynard Skynard was his favorite band. My brother asked me to take take of his dog if he should die and I said yes. So today, 9 years later I am driving his sweet dog Tina`to the vet and the first song that comes on the radio is Simple Man! I never hear it on the radio, I knew that my brother was with us today and so happy I am taking care of his girl! The meaning to me is my brother lived too fast and did not slow down enough to enjoy the simple things he loved.

I agree that it is the simple things and following your heart that matter most in life but some people use that as an excuse to avoid applying their talents and abilities to bless others when I means they may benefit financially. The other idea is to use what God gave you, earn whatever, do not place your faith or wellbeing on these things but bless your family and others with what you are able to bring in. That way you have BOTH simplicity and happiness AND financial blessings too!

This song has deep meaning for lots of people. The advice and wisdom in the lyrics go back to stoic philosophy and the ancient Greeks. It also blends well with Christian principles. If you truly want to be happy then being a simple kind of man is what you should seek. You must first learn to love yourself before you can find happiness. I am not sure the song writers truly understood the impact their lyrics would have on people but this is sage advice as old as Western civilization itself.

I heard this song one night and didn't really catch the whole song but from what I heard it really reminded me of my only son that was going thru alot at the time. He just turned 21. The words are so heartfelt that I had to send them to him. It is the truth with the kids in this generation that they want that big money. Materialistic life. And he told me that one day. So I just had to send the lyrics to him.

Women are simple. So being a simple man means being a ladies man, lol. So his sitting by mama was his etiquette training and mama is sending him out into the world to get a woman and that he’d find love. Don’t forget there is someone up above. That would be a missionary position. Well at least that’s my interpretation of the meaning. It’s very deep... well usually. THANKS
