The song is about rowing.
"back and forth the struggle consumes us all". The abyss of pain that opens up in the second minute of the race. The legs feeling like they are going to explode, while the forearms seem to be splitting. Then the pain becomes confused and disorganized.
"trying to keep a level head" trying to stay focused in a race, maintaining composure and form.
"decisions have to be made, the best path is the hardest earned. " if you want to win at anything, you will pay the price even if it means complete self annihilation.
"there is so much at stake. I stumble, i lose my place. " the pressure of the race. Trying to keep up or stay ahead of your adversary.
"fight it or let it go, but i choose how the day will end" winning is a decision. Races are won by those who refuse to be beaten. In a close race the athlete reaches a point where he must decide whether to whole heartedly go for it or back off.
"i lose myself inside my head. No one can touch you when you're outside staring in. Remove myself from this rat race. " staying focused on the finish line, losing oneself in the stroke, ignoring distractions.
The heavy breathing and scream at ~2: 45 really captures the magnitude of pain the rower feels on the last 500m of a race.
"in the most unsettling of times, today i become the bull" fight through the pain with persistence and determination.
Anger and aggression are very powerful but they are not easy emotions to call up on demand. That's why I listen to atreyu.
