So what I'm thinking here is, he's obviously missing this woman he was besotted by and in love with, and "Murdock 9-6182, is her phone number minus the first two digits. Murdock could be a play on the corresponding letters of the first two digits. For example , where I grew up and lived in New Jersey, the first 3 digits of the original phone number at the time were, 691. They called it OX1- followed by the rest of the phone number. Hence it was often referred to as Oxford 1, followed by the remaining 4 digits. In this case 6182. Making it Oxford 1-6182. Just a guess!
