Icon For Hire – Get Well lyrics
We throw tantrums like parties
We're not happy 'til everyone knows we're sick
And that's just how we like it
We've hurt bad enough, right, we've earned it

Don't tell the others but it's all getting old
I mean how many more times must our stories be told?
And being lonely's only fun in a group
It sort of loses it's charm when it's true

I meant it when I said I wanna get well, I wanna get well
Are the rest of you so content, stay where you are but it hurts like help
And I'm sure it's fun at first, test your pulse and check your vitals
If it's only a game you lost me, I quit it with the suicidal recital

So now you know all my secrets
I want out, I know I don't need this
Can you find me friends that don't rank me on what I've been through
The more battle scars the more attention it gets you

Don't tell the others but it's all getting old
I mean how many more times must our stories be told?
And being lonely's only fun in a group
It sort of loses it's charm when it's true

I meant it when I said I wanna get well, I wanna get well
Are the rest of you so content, stay where you are but it hurts like help
And I'm sure it's fun at first, test your pulse and check your vitals
If it's only a game you lost me, I quit it with the suicidal recital

Yeah
we should've known it would end this way
What did you expect, pretend it all away
And all we've got left is a sorry pile of hearts
I'm getting out, gonna write myself a new start
Come on dry your eyes, meet me on the other side
Run as fast as you can and we'll make it out alive
We know better now, we don't have to live like this
Go tell them all we don't have to live like this

I meant it when I said I wanna get well, I wanna get well
Are the rest of you so content, stay where you are but it hurts like help
And I'm sure it's fun at first, test your pulse and check your vitals
If it's only a game you lost me, I quit it with the suicidal recital

If it's only a game you lost me, I quit it with the suicidal recital

I think that this song is about taking action and dealing with life's problems by moving on instead of letting them make you a raging, bitter person. Suicidal recital refers to the attention-seeking, self-destructive show that some people put on when others are around, a show that actually gets them attention but from the wrong kinds of people and is ultimately not fulfilling at all. It's about taking charge and getting well mentally and emotionally. Lovely song!

And she’s saying if people are treating it all just like a game then she doesn’t get it because why would anyone want to be in pain or risk their life, and she’s making the decision to try to turn her life around. And she specifically said “suicidal recital” because recitals are competitions and also have an audience, so this group of people who are struggling are “performing” for the audience, but also competing amongst themselves to see who is worse (struggles more/has the worst trauma) so they can “win” at suffering more and feel validated.

“Can you find me friends that don't rank me on what I've been through. The more battle scars the more attention it gets you.”

Like I said in the above paragraph, in the mental illness community, there is a lot of competition (especially with eating disorders), yes I know it’s weird but yeah. You want to the the one who suffers more or has the worst/most trauma because then your struggle seems more valid/people will feel more sorry for you.

“I meant it when I said I wanna get well, I wanna get well. Are the rest of you so content, stay where you are but it hurts like hell. And I'm sure it's fun at first, test your pulse and check your vitals. If it's only a game you lost me, I quit it with the suicidal recital.”

With this part, she’s basically calling out everyone else who sorta holds onto their mental illness/trauma and basically just lives for it/becomes it, as if there’s nothing else to them as a person. Like people say they want to get better and wish they were “normal” but they deny help or self-sabotage. She’s asking if all those people are actually content with living like that as if there’s nothing more to life and they can stay in their issue and not try to get better but it just causes more pain. And like it’s kinda “fun” to live life on the edge and you check how your body is. Idk how to explain this but personally I relate to this line so much with my eating disorder. At some point I became completely obsessed with my heart rate and constantly check and monitor is and always want to know my vitals because if my pulse is getting lower and lower and my vitals are worse, that means I’m doing “well” with my eating disorder (losing weight, affecting my body, getting worse. etc). It’s like you want to constantly see how much your body can take (“test your pulse”). The last thing I want is a “normal” heart rate and “normal” vitals. So I constantly track them and try to make them worse. And it’s honestly fun.

(Have to post these in a couple different ones cause I think it was too long.) (One above this, about the “pulse” is mine too.)

But this is definitely about mental illness, no question about it. I relate to so much of this. Whether it be BPD, eating disorders, depression, etc. This song makes PERFECT sense to me, like I feel like you have to personally relate to all this and have mental illness in order to really understand this song and how completely and utterly TRUE this all is. Like she hit the nail on the head with this one.

Like the “we’re not happy till everyone knows we’re sick” is like perfect. Sometimes the emotional anguish you’re in is so horrible you can’t help but try to (more or less subtly) make other people aware that you’re not okay. And often when you’ve made it clear to them, you often regret it because then they either try to interfere or they get mad at you, so you’re just trying to get out that you’re not alright but it backfires.

I previously posted (one talking about eating disorders at some points). I noticed something else in the “test your pulse, check your vitals.” Like how I said I’d constantly try to get worse with my eating disorder, and see how things I do affect my heart rate. So it’s basically seeing how far you can push your body and check to see how it’s responding to what you’re doing. It’s “testing” your body/pulse. Seeing all you can get away with, it tests your pulse because they things you’re doing (engaging in eating disorder behaviors/attempting suicide/etc) could kill you, your pulse could not be able to pull through. So yeah wanted to add that little detail!

It reminds me of the psychiatric ward and I get the feeling she has been there (or whoever wrote this) and she is quitting trying to commit suicide. The psychiatric ward is exactly like this. It feels like such a game and even through all your protests you do want to get well but help can be just as painful admitting your in defeat. And I love that one line "can you find me friends that don't rank me on what i've been through the more battle scars the more attention it gets you" I do not think it could be worded any more perfectly all of it is just amen -. -
