I believe it's a song about the fine line many of us walk between love and hate, sanity and insanity, life and death, heaven and hell, forgiveness and resentment. Bottom line though, I think he is referring to the end of a bad relationship. He pardons himself for turning his back and just walking away, but he can not take it anymore, can not listen to her anymore. Her faith (in whatever) and his lack thereof. I totally relate. Awesome song.

This could be a fight he's having with his wife. The first verse says he's about to leave. The second verse is him reconsidering, but not fully over it. In the last part of the song he's saying he will come back, but is keeping his guard up. But she has to compromise as well.
Or it could be talking about salvation on a spiritual level. The first verse says he's not accepting a life of faith. The second verse is saying he might give it a try. The last verse says he's not ready. I know Aaron's not a spiritual person, probably atheist. So I bet the song is about a fight with a person instead of a deity.
