My god, this song is not about layne staley, will people ever understand? "just a bullet away" is about layne staley, supposedly. James hetfield just said that because the song was just too suggestive. Why do you think it was never included on the death magnetic album in the first place?
As for "rebel of babylon", the song is truly outlining the story of christ. Ever since james got out of rehab he has been a good, honest man. If there is any comparison, or 'double-entendre' (second meaning) to be recognized it would be james' past alcoholism, hence " rebel grip your bottle tight, just float away ".
My point being, I guess it would take serious genius to comprehend the meaning of this song. (sarcasm) seriously people, this song is not about layne staley, honestly use your head. What song would make sense if it were related to layne? Rebel of babylon or just a bullet away, think about it.

Metallica has a knack for having dual meanings in their songs, often by way of metaphor. This song is about someone drowning their life away through drugs (alcohol and heroin specifically) and then it paints them in the light of a religious martyr, showing what the focus character sees themselves to be, a shining beacon that all will mourn in his passing. But in reality the only one mourning is them.
