Nat King Cole – Autumn Leaves lyrics
Music by Joseph Kosma)

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

When I heard this tune, sung by nat king cole and, later, in the summer of 1956 (because this was the theme song of the film of the same name, released to the viewing public, at that time), I thought that this drama, had to do with the aging of a cherished spouse and (her) subsequent passing (away). But, though nat is the voice of the theme song, it is really the woman who misses her beau (played by cliff robertson): a man much younger than herself, and she--in his absence, due to the protracted mental illness of this, her much-younger husband--reflects, sadly, on how short life really is.
