NEEDTOBREATHE – Devil's Been Talkin' lyrics
Bag of bones and blood red cheeks
Guilty from the words I speak
Say the truth will set you free
But it won't for me
Cause I'm uneasy in my skin
Hangin on by a thread
Life it hasn't left me yet
But I won't forget
The devil's been talkin

The ship is setting off to sea
But it's sailing without me
I can't help but feel I'm on
An island born to sink
The devil's been talkin

We can't change who we are
We are all alone

I'm running out
Of this hole alone
These fingers bled
Down to the bone
And I can't move
This hell is cold
The chorus sings
This is home
The devil's been talkin

Bag of bones and blood red cheeks
Guilty from the words I speak
Say the truth will set you free
But it won't for me
The devil's been talkin

I believe that this whole song is reminding us that god doesn't give us the spirit of defeat. So every time there is a verse explaining these lyrics of defeat, it is pointed out very soon after that the devil is the one talking.
Sometimes people start to pray to god that they feel defeated and run down but god's word will only remind you that he's not the one that gives you those feelings. In other words, "realize that the devil's the one who is talking. "
I love the reference in the beginning because to me it challenges the cross. "bag of bones and blood red cheeks. Guilty from the words i speak" [jesus was put on the cross and deemed guilty of our sin]. "say the truth will set you free" [the truth of god's promise through jesus on the cross is what has set us free]. And then the lyrics goes on to say-"but it won't for me, ... The devil's been talking. " that is the devil's purpose to try and take away the power in the cross. But he'll never succeed. He'll always be just "talk. "
That's how I see the song. Super real and full of truth.

This song had very little meaning to me until, through a mentoring experience, I became aware of lies that I was believing. I happened to have this cd in my car when I was driving home and this song came on. Things I had been believing. I can't change, it's who I am, I'm alone - the truth wasn't setting me free. I believed that god had the power to change lives, but that mine was hopeless - that I'd be entrapped by a particular sin for the rest of my earthly days. My mentor pointed out the lies that I was believing. I could change, it wasn't who I was, and most importantly, I wasn't alone - christ was there with the power to change me. This song is significant because it calls out the lies for what they are, it doesn't trivialize the feelings experienced when you are caught in lies.

Come on y'all- this is a song that's written a lot like the screwtape letters were written by cs lewis. The lyrics are an expression of those times that everyone, christian or not, goes through, at least internally. Its the struggle for the mind and what is a person going to choose to believe is true. These are all things that the "devil's been talking. " that's why there no hope or peace, unlike many of ntb's other songs. Yet at the end of each round, its as if bear is recognizing, "wait a minute, this isn't truth, its just the devil trying to talk to me. "

To me, this song speaks of the world and us. The devil is trying to persuade us into believing that we can do nothing about who we are and what we've become. N that leaves us with nothing to the meaning of life. But ultimately this song is trying to bring to light that savior who can save us despite what had happened in our life is the answer to every of our problems, and there is this best place only love can go, where there is our heavenly father. But this is just how I see it but the song's composer will definitely have something to say about it because I know this song has got a deeper meaning. So, we'd love to hear from needtobreathe!

Honestly, everyone is talking about how it's such a bad song because it's talking about how the devil is talking. People are saying things like, "well i wonder what the devil is feeling knowing that he's all over this song... " and etc. I'm a singer and songwriter. I've come to the conclusion that every song is different to someone, so there are always different meanings, but to me, all of you are right on. You're right, I don't see anything good about the song. I don't see a flicker of hope written in it. I don't. But that's just it. I think that's the point. In life we have to remember that the devil is always talking to us. Every turn is a new temptation. But we have to remember that, as christians, the devil is always talking, but so is Jesus. Some are saying that the devil can be to loud at times, but I disagree because of what 1 corinthians 10: 13 says. I don't know. I personally love this song. I think that it's brutally honest about how rough it gets when the devil talks to us. Sometimes, it can be unbearable. I love the honesty in this song, and everything that it pertains to.

This song was written from a personal experience of being around folks that want nothing more than to incriminate you. That being said it doesn't matter whether or not you tell the truth your guilty as charged because the intent is to make you guilty. Thus "say the truth will set you free, but it won't for me, devils been talking. " the people are being used by the devil and it's not really them talking it's the devil talking. "bag of bones and blood red cheeks guilty for the words i speak" meaning no matter what I say I get beat up, wrongfully accused and lied about. The ship sailing off to sea is referring to opportunity lost because of all the drama.
