Norman Greenbaum – Spirit In The Sky lyrics
[Verse 1]
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best

[Verse 2]
Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3]
Never been a sinner, I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus

So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up
With the spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best

[Instrumental]

I have loved this song since the first time I heard it. I don't care who wrote it but I have put a stipulation in my will that it is to be sung (copies to whoever attends & they must sing along) at my funeral. No big deal about hidden meanings, I just love the lyrics & hope the beat & words will put a smile on the faces of those who attend my last hurrah.

It's a goof, but like all things artistic, the song has different meanings to everyone listening to it. I really do think it's an honest interpretation of a gospel song. Greenbaum himself said it was an attempt at a gospel song after hearing porter waggoner singing one. As for the "never been a sinner" line, there are some "christians" who take that (erroneous) attitude. Those who believe in the "once saved, always saved" tack. One has to become a reflection on christ's teachings in order for salvation to take root innthe person.

"Never been a sinner...", reflects the delusion of the lost person, justifying himself that although he did his own will and lived his life for himself as he pleased, lived in sin, hurting others to elevate themselves and make themselves rich, that in the end that he will be forgiven and sent to a place that is the best. This is a false misconception that many lost humans hold and unfortunately this false belief will send them to Hell. When you're standing at the throne of judgement, you will be judged by your works, whether good or bad, and your works is what will cast you to Hell. The only thing that saves you is to be redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, and this is to accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour, by trusting that Jesus Christ died on the cross shed his blood for all your sins, was buried, and rose on the third day. We are saved by faith alone through trusting Jesus Christ. When we are saved we are sealed with the Holy Spirit. The first thing that a person has to realize and accept that they are a SINNER and hear the the Gospel of Salvation in which I stated above, and after you hear the gospel, you either believe or reject the Gospel. I Corinthians 15;1-4. There will be people in Heaven who were sinners here on earth, but believed in Jesus Christ, and in hell there will be people, sinners who were justified by their works good and bad. Yes, the nicest best people who have contributed good will to society will be in hell, because they did not trust Jesus Christ, but rather put their trust in their good works!

Romans 3: 23 (niv) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of god,.
Romans 5: 8 (kjv) but god commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, christ died for us.
Rom 6: 5 if we shared in jesus' death by being baptized, we will be raised to life with him.
Luke 10: 25 on one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test jesus. "teacher," he asked, "what must i do to inherit eternal life? "
Luke 10: 27 he answered, "'love the lord your god with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'love your neighbor as yourself. '"
28 "you have answered correctly," jesus replied. "do this and you will live. "

The third verse saying "never been a dinner, I've never signed, I got a friend in Jesus"...
HE WASN'T SAYING HE HAD NEVER SINNED, HE WAS SAYING THAT THE LORD HAD NEVER SINNED, I'VE NEVER SINNED AND BECAUSE OF THAT HE HAS A FRIEND IN JESUS.

HE UNDERSTOOD CHRISTIANITY, HE WASN'T SPEAKING ABOUT HIMSELF UNTIL "I'VE GOT A FRIEND IN JESUS"... HE KNEW THAT JESUS WAS THE SON OF GOD AND HIS BELIEF IN HIM MADE HIM A FRIEND!
REMEMBER THE GOSPEL HYMM " WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS"..? Composer Charles C.Converse in 1855

The purpose of salvation is to have the wages of our sins paid through the blood of Jesus Christ.
"For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul." Leviticus 17:11 kjv
Think of a judge in a courtroom, and you are a thief at the stand. Don't you think a good and fair judge would sentence you to pay for the crime you committed? Or do you think that judge should let you go without any repercussions even though other criminals are punished? We all are sinners. Thus we all have a price to pay. The original sin of doubting God's commandment to not eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge (good and evil) was committed by Eve as Satan tempted her.
"16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Genesis 2:16:17 kjv
Satan lied to her saying that she won't die if she eats of the fruit and that God did not want them to eat it because then they'll be as gods knowing good and evil. She doubted the commandment of God to not eat it and Adam ate also. They were then cursed in several ways (in Genesis 3), removed from Garden of Eden, and the wages of their sin (And ours) is death.
"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."1 Corinthians 15:22 KJV
God's moral standards are perfect and we can not comprehend that as we live in sin and like to define our own morality. But we all are born with a conscience to know right from wrong (although it quietens if we continue to ignore it). God is loving, merciful, and graceful to allow a way to have our sins forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ. As controversial as people may think, before Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, people attoned for their sins by offerings of unblemished "clean" animals which were the best of their herd/flock. This was in the Old Testament and as commanded by the Lord, which had to be done as they sinned. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He was the only one who could die for our sins, because He is without sin-unlike anyone before or after. Jesus Christ is not a mere human bein g, but God manifested in the flesh and was here from the beginning.
"1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." John 1:1-5 KJV
"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." John 1:14 KJV
So think of that courtroom scene again. Imagine that you being sentenced to life inprisonment, but someone enters the room and walks over to the judge and pays for your freedom. You can walk out the door. To be saved, is something that has to be in sincerity and you must repent of your sins as well. You don't just ask Jesus in your heart and continue living as before believing "well my sins are forgiven, Im good to go". You need to change and genuinely try to follow God's law.
"And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself." Luke 10:27 kjv
To get saved, is not for you to get your spot in Heaven, it's actually to be able to have a relationship with our Almighty creator God. If we are unsaved and thus our sins are not attoned for, we are unfit to be in God's presence because He is perfectly Holy. To go to Heaven is Gods kingdom where we can have a relationship with God and worship Him because we owe everything to Him-afterall, He created the universe and gave us life. If someone gives you a gift, in common decency you thank them and have gratitude towards them.
"1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" John 14:1-6 KJV
If you ask me, Jesus has a lot of value-which is a total understatement. I was blessed with life, every moment I have is God-given. Through Jesus, I was blessed with a new life- my heart was changed as my desires shifted towards wanting to keep God's commandments. My heart was softened. My conscience strengthened greatly. I was blind, lost, decieved, and condemned before I asked Jesus into my heart one day 3 years ago while I walked through the woods. All you have to do to recieve this free gift, a choice we all have the ability and free will to make-is to admit that you are a sinner needing the Lord Jesus Christ to save you and that you hand your life over to Him to love and obey the Father. You can talk to him however you please but must confess that you're a sinner needing Jesus and He is your Lord and Saviour. It is vital that you also repent.
"“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38 kjv
"For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:10 KJV
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9 kjv
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romams 10:9 kjv
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." Matthews 7:13-14 kjv
If you have and keep the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ being your Lord and Saviour you are saved eternally. You do not need to keep getting saved. If you have a question about Gods Word, the best source to search for the answer...is in the Bible and prayer. Many questions are asked, but do people do enough searching out?
"And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;" Hebrews 5:9 kjv
I was born into a self-proclaimed Christian home (whether some members are true converters I don't know their hearts), went to church and did Bible study with my dad as a child; but I lost faith out of at least partially not doing my homework into questions I had. And so I declared myself agnostic for years. I had thought I knew the fundamentals of God, Jesus, and the Bible and decided that it didnt make sense to me. So I went about my life as I pleased. I did, however pray to God that if He were real to let me know in a way that I personally would understand. I prayed that many times and waited. In 2016, February 17th, I sat at a table in Waffle House with my ex-boyfriend. We just broke up due to an unforseen event. We talked about the signs we saw that were hounding us about that unforeseen event. I then reflected on the moments in my life where I was given second chances and signs to quit dangerous habits I had. Things added up to me, that I saw that there had to be a higher power, God guiding me and working in my life. Months passed. It was then the beginning of summer and I felt a tug in my heart that I needed to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I actually hardly knew anything about God unbeknownst to me at the time. I looked it up on the internet how to get saved. I then went walking on a trail in the woods to one of my favorite spots where I accepted Jesus into my hearr. A few months passed and I didnt know that anything would change in me nor my life. It started (at least as far as my knowledge) as a voice popping in my head...more like a feeling...hard to explain. It said/felt "were going to break up and Im going to find someone new". I was sitting next to my boyfriend at the time in the car. Everything seemed awesome at the time and we spoke of future plans (not marriage) together. I was distressed a little by the thought, especially since it was so random and just came into my head/heart like that. What do you know, I believe it was a few days later he left me totally unexpected...couple months later I met my now fiance whom I've been with almost 3 years. I actually met him shortly after praying to God for a man to enter my life who was right for me. The first date we had, he spoke about the God and we prayed together. It was very different to me...I learned a lot about repenting, Jesus, and God. I came home realizing I can't live the way I used to, because it was wrong and would be illogical as a follower of Christ. I realized I needed to ask forgiveness of my sins to God and get closer to Him. I stopped watching my favorite shows, stopped listening to favorite music, stopped smoking weed cold turkey (I smoked a lot everyday for anxiety), and since then I have transformed more and more. Not of my own doing, but by the new heart God blessed me with that has been softened and filled with new desires. My favorite shows, movies, music, etc changed because it was not in line with God's word whether it encouraged various sins, was blasphemous, or the like. I also shortly after getting broken up with and entering senoir year of college, I came home to visit my parents. My mom and I for years have had a tumultuous relationship filled with anger, resentment, hurt, and tension. I had many times tried and wanted to forgive her but my heart couldnt...I didnt possess the ability. My heart was hardened by her and the world I was very hateful towards. And I was hateful, you could observe that. I kept to myself a lot and I had a hard time allowing myself to even cry. But that night my mom came downstairs late at night where I sat alone watching tv. We exchanged hellos and something or another was said as well. I believe I came over to hug her hello because we were standing beside each other and seemingly randomly she started bursting into tears apologizing for everything and pleading for forgiveness. I realized in my heart, that I finally had peace about it and truly did forgive her. I told her and apologized to her too and we stayed up talking like we haven't before. Since then, we've gotten a lot closer and can have a relationship we haven't had since about middle school. The list goes on to all the many blessings God has gave me and how He has transformed my life and self. Believe me, I still have rough rough times in life. But I love the Lord and He blessed me with eternal life and so many things even though I deserve nothing but Hell for disobeying Him as a sinner. He also has greatly revealed truth to me of the realities of the world. I was so deep into the false indoctrination taught in our school systems and in the world as a whole. He shows us the truth as to not be deceived. You can't fight what youre up against if you dont even know the realities behind it. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6:12 kjv
I pray for you all and myself. I pray for all to get saved and repent because we all perish, we all are sinners, we all are ignorant of the time of our demise. Jumping out of a plane, you'd have faith in the parachute to save you from sure death if you had been free falling right? I can't convince anyone to believe Gods Word nor in Jesus Christ being our Saviour...but I suggest that if you have any desire for life that you take the risk-free look at His Word. It won't hurt you to just look into it for yourself and ask questions! Thats a good thing, because you will be able to learn and grow in your faith that way. The Bible is scientifically sound. You just need to read it, read and study scientific articles...but I mean dig into them to understand assumptions of experiments, data, methods, etc and how they gathered the data, etc. Dont blindly read it absorbing the information without critical thinking. My advice to you and I speak on my experience in blind faith of science and my newfound critical thinking of it with my science background in anthropology (biology, geology, history). Im not perfect nor an expert, but I love and have concern for people to wake up and dig for themselves. I wrote this (novel) in order to share with you the word of God (only a miniscule fragment of it), my testimony (condensed), and some of my personal advice out of love for you. Now not some weird cult-like brainless love, but love because were all equally needing salvation and I wouldn't wish Hell on anyone nor eternal separation from God. I see how much God transformed me and all the love He has for us that I want that for everyone to experience and enjoy. God wants that for everyone. God bless you, and you're in my prayers.
As for this song, although it is very catchy in rhythem, the lyrics are ironic. Ironic, because it acts like a gospel song but is not Biblical. He claims to not be a sinner which is humorous because how can anyone even if you didn't believe in God think that you have never done anything wrong? But it's dangerous to people who are unbelievers or new to their faith, because it is misleading of what a Christ follower is and really...who we all are:sinners. Jesus Christ is our bestfriend, so i agree with that part but it would be notable for him to have added something about salvation! Jesus doesn't recommend people either, He saves and through salvation you can have your sins washed away and be suitable to enter into God's kingdom where it is holy. Honestly this seems borderline mocking like he is treating Jesus as just a mere bouncer of a great club letting you in. Granted, the song writer could have been just ignorant on this. Regardless, wrong is wrong whether ignorance is at play or not.

To me, this as a spoof of a certain simple-minded and basically selfish understanding of religion, which sees it as a means to an end: you don't live decently because there's anything right about it per se, you do it to get the big prize at the end. And jesus has no value in and of himself, either as a teacher or as an example; instead, his value lies in being able to get you into heaven-- like knowing the maitre'd can get you a good seat at a nightclub.
