"love and blessings" are the most important things in life. --and always very needed every where in every sphere of life. "bop-bop-a-whoa" of course is money we all get caught up working for on a tread mill. Never enough. "heaven's lack of rain" "scientists complain" could be global warming mentioned by kmeyer1661. Sounds about right as a result of residue from money making schemes. "something called me from my sleep" is our eyes opening once again to the realities of what is really important in life which is "love and blessings"
"ours to hold but not to keep" means we can enjoy "love and blessings" yet we need to share them as we give them away. The most important things in life are free! --and beautiful!

I think the "scientists be complaining," is the discussion of global warming.
It's poetry, not super literal. . Anyway, the maple trees be just a bit duller than the year before, " I think he's referring to the color not being as vivid. Due to the lack of water. Dry season, brings dryer duller color in the trees. Being, "called from his sleep, " is waking from a nightmare. I think the song is just about being kind to one another, and the "simple kindness, " goes along way in this human chaos.
