Peter Gabriel – In Your Eyes lyrics
Love I get so lost, sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

All my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes

I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches

In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes

Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
The heat I see in your eyes
In your eyes in your eyes
In your eyes in your eyes
In your eyes in your eyes

It is about a profound aching for the love that can only come from our lord of lords. I lay here in bed, not sleeping, but rather, weeping at 3 A. M in loneliness that can't ever be fully filled by mere humanity. And there is no one to even be a drop in that ocean of emptiness in this moment. My husband has died young, then the friend in my life who I loved and who once knew more of me than anyone else has abandoned me. It can only be my heavenly father's eyes that in my brokenness I am complete. The grand facade of dry eyes and wholeness and strength that my young children need now can only melt away when I can myself be fully vulnerable in his presence to experience the only place that is truly home, in his eyes. I want to stand and stare again. I get so tired working for my children's and my survival. It's the scariness of letting down my guard against my pain, the pride that gets us through the day in a world that doesn't stop turning for my grief. It's allowing my instincts to return to fully feel anything. Gloriously, right there is god's love ablaze, ready always. There he is, in ways that could never be contained even a thousand churches. My searches for comfort there have indeed been mostly fruitless. The only resolution for all my pain is to live surrendered in his embrace, going forward ever in the light, the heat, in his eyes. Thanks peter.

We had this song played for our 1st dance- bride / groom for our wedding. I feel it is the ultimate love song. True love is being able to be who you are, the good and the bad, no acts, no facades that we sometimes have to show to the rest of the world. We may search all our life and finally find that one person who makes us complete, and who we complete. In my case it was through one failed marriage with 14 years in between at the age of 51! Gabriel captures true, unconditional love perfectly. In the other person we see resolution to challenges, refuge from the world etc, etc. It is just a perfect song.

Unregistered, Jan 3., I never thought anyone else would hear what I hear. I'm so sorry for your loss and yes, I believe the endless, limitless Beloved can be found in this song. My heart feels your heart broken.
I was meditating and suddenly thought of these lyrics.

"Love, I get so lost sometimes"....lost in this shallow world of material delusion and suffering
"Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart" nothing feels like the peace that is God, once you experience it, life pales in comparison.
"When I want to run away" the restless mind makes it hard to hear the voice of peace
"I come back to the place you are"...I sit in silence. I meditate to feel God's presence.
"All my instincts, they return...the grand facade..." ....in meditation the five senses are turned inward. The grand facade of this material world, of separateness from Source burns away.
"Without a noise...without my pride...I reach out from the inside"... Silently meditatating in devotion and humbleness I dive deeply to find God, reaching out deeply within.
(In finding that eternal source of Love:)
"In your eyes, the light-the heat, in your eyes I am complete"... I realize I am already perfect. I am not this body, I am spirit, I am one with everything. There was no struggle, no suffering, I only imagined it. "I see the doorway to a thousand churches" I see the unity of all things through the doorway of the spiritual third eye, all religions lead to God. The light of all, the heat (energy) animating the universe. I want to feel that completeness, that oneness.
"Love...so much pain...so much wasted"...it's hard to see so much suffering in the world, you can't help but be caught up. And we struggle in our day to day with the ego that keeps us separate, wasting time, it is literally work to keep the mind calmed and centered, "awake and alive".
"The resolution of all my fruitless searches"...how many lives have I spent seeking? How many books, how many truths have I had to uncover to get to this feeling of wholeness?
If you have a guru Peter Gabriel, this is a love song to that "dispeller of darkness". It is an ode to meditation and inward searching. It's a cosmic symphony to the origin of love that is God. My two cents anyway.

Wow unregistered on jan. 3 you have totally touched my heart, rather hard to do, I have my own facade and pride. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. I also agree that god loves us very much. I am a single father, I know that loneliness that you speak of. And it is not my ex-wife. It is the woman that I fell in love with next that this song reminds me about. She made me complete. But she is gone now and all that left is the smoking crater that was my heart. It is one thing to break-up badly and move on, it is another, when you encourage it because she got a great job opportunity in another country. Having to look her in the eyes and tell her that it is great job, smile. It was the hardest thing I ever did. But love makes you do hard things. Keep the faith and look out for the little ones, they need you strong.

Its something too emotional. Everytime I hear the song I remember those times I told myself to let go of you but everytime I do you were there saying to have one more try, promise to play the game better the next time. I want you back not because of what you've promised but its something that my heart telling me to hold on, to believe, to trust for the most important you made my heart beating;-(

It is about god and you soulmate. It is seeing eternity, god, infinite love, in the person you love without your facade, without your pride, from the infinite spirit within you. I think my favorite song lyric ever may be: in your eyes I see the doorway to a thousand churches, the resolution to all my fruitless searches. Have you ever lived someone so much you felt you were close to god? I just love this song so much.

As can be seen in the interpretation by others, I believe there are two meanings: one entirely spiritual and one about the most spiritual experience we can have in this world. So "love" is a synonym for God. That makes the song a prayer of sorts: 'God, I get so lost sometimes ..." He uses "love" as God because in reality, God is defined by 1,000+ churches and so God really can't be defined. That brings us to the worldly meaning. The closest we get to seeing God in our everyday life is true love of another person. That too cannot be defined if it's true love. It's magical and transformative. Not everyone finds true love. Some find it and lose it because they can't grasp how awesome it is that they cannot fully understand what they've found. In both cases, the experience of emptiness filling their heart is as powerful as love filling their heart. It kind of comes with the territory because no one can fully embrace this kind of love 24/7. And there are periods of days/weeks/years when they become lost (emptiness fills my heart) and need to get back to the experience they know for a fact is possible. In essence this song is about being human and needing the perfect love that both experiences offer. Thus, the connection between the best that is available in this world if you don't believe in God and in the reality of a spiritual journey that many people believe is real. We all seem to understand that the magic is available, but unless we calm ourselves and reach out from the inside, we'll always be severely limited in how much of it we can truly grasp.

I believe it is about loss. I think he may have been writing about someone dying and being able to see to the beyond, to god, through their eyes. "i get so tired working for our survival" may mean a caregiver for an ill person. "i look for the time with you to keep me awake and alive" meaning what keeps me going here on earth, is knowing I will be with you again. Until I see you again in heaven. I believe it is very spiritual. It is a common theme of his. Peter wrote another song about grief. He nails the awful, hateful feelings of grieving (from the "city of angels" soundtrack called "i grieve"). It is almost difficult to listen to if you have suffered great loss. As I have. And this song got me through the death of my son (in your eyes) because it is so hopeful and beautiful.

The song speaks to me about God. The line "in your eyes I am complete" conveys the sediment in Genesis 1: 26, 27 that God made man in His own image and likeness and not as an imperfect mortal in the Adam and Eve allegory (Gen. 2). Also the line, "I see the doorway to a thousand churches" seems to me to express the feeling that all churches have the same desire to convey that there is an afterlife, just in different ways. If you don't believe me then read the thousands of near death experiences. Ones that tell that love is a tangible presence is really the only reality. Our mortal existence is really just a dream.

Well those are some interesting interpretations. I recently heard an interview with Peter and he explained that the song was written about his father, so with that in mind, listen to it again and you will get it I think. It's interesting how songs mean different things to different people, yet can be so far from the actual intent of the song. Some real "doom and gloom" stuff up there. Peter is a inspiring writer, almost a teacher if you will, listen closely and the truth will be revealed.
