Phantom Of The Opera – The Music Of The Night lyrics
Night time sharpens
Heightens each sensation

Darkness stirs and wakes
Imagination

Silently the senses
Abandon their defenses

Slowly, gently
Night unfurls its splendor

Grasp it, sense it
Tremulous and tender

Turn your face away
From the garish light of day.
Turn your thoughts away
From cold, unfeeling light,
And listen to the music of the night
.

Close your eyes
And surrender to your darkest dreams.
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
.
Close your eyes,
Let your your spirit start to soar.
And you'll live as you've never lived before.

Softly, deftly
Music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it
Secretly possess you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness that you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night

Let your mind
Start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be.
Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling
Sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me
Savor each sensation

Let the dream begin
Let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

The phantom sings about how even though he lives in shadow, straying from the world, he can still be as beautiful and talented as anyone else. He sings "music of the night" to tell christine this, and mainly, just to express his love for her. (p. S. If you haven't seen the movie, I would highly suggest it to both those who have and haven't seen the play. Gerard butler does a fantastic job as the phantom, as does emmy rossum as christine. Both extremely exceptional vocalists.) :)

The song means to let go of the world you that you know and join the phantom in his world of night. To let your mind be free to desire and want whatever it wants. It means to let yourself fully engross yourself within the music itself and not just listen to it. The song is one that is filled with longing and the desires that only the night can show.

The Phantom knows Christine is scared of his world of darkness, and he's trying to tell her that his world is different and better than the others; it is a world of music and a place where she has nothing holding her back. He's trying to tell her that in his world she can relax and he will protect her. The Phantom also tells Christine that she will have to listen to him and forget the world she was so familiar with in order for her to be acceptable to him. I think I'm forgetting something, but otherwise, this is how I interpret it.

I like how the phantom felt sad while bringing people onto the lair and Christine's being scared because he did not know him she thought she was the angel of music and because Raoul is Christine's light and the phantom is Christine's darkness and the phantom is telling her not to go to Raoul's light.

3 layers of meaning. Obsession good vs bad where Raoul is the good. Second is the subconscious mind hidden sexuality not same as outwardly romance. Third It is not just psychological but spiritual. The dark truth inside. The eternal friend and lover or father or teacher but we are scared of and who makes us play on though we think wrongly that we do this ourselves. Multiple interpretations make the story so appealing.

I think the phantom in this song represents god higher self energy universe. Night time represents meditation. Hence, when you are in a meditative state. Ur senses heightens and sharpens. Abandon their defenses. Garish light of day represents ego. Phantom/God is trying to tell us to turn away from ego and listen to the "music of the night" (which represents high frequency vibrations/god consciousness). Then it describes what the music can do for your soul. Surrendering your darkest side. Only then can you belong to me. Meaning one with God (enlightenment).
I believe that we are the physical manifestation of god's consciousness. God expands when we expand. We (as physical manifestation) alone can make his song (the music that he writes) take flight. We, hand in hand with God. Helps make "the music of the night".
