I totally agree with the other comment. What's great about the song is that it's open for interpretation, in which I'll shed light on mine. For me, it's about letting go. It's about moving ahead though that may be hard to do. In lyrical context, one was waiting for someone else's love, attention or just plain presence. This person was busy with someone else, ignoring the speaker. This only made the speaker stronger, and even though he/she would look upon the past, the silent present brought forth a revelation of change. The speaker kills the past and comes back to life, back into the sun and back into depending on no one but his or herself. It's a revelation that letting go will set you free, and realizing this is only the first step towards one's happiness.

My personal interpretation:.
We all have moments in our lives that "define" us as beings; those moments are ever-lasting.
The lyrics, in my mind, suggest that we all, at times, find difficulty, in relating to others.
We tend to "sense" things very differently; consequently, what may have significant meaning to ourselves, can generate misunderstanding and, at times, mistrust in others, and in the world in which we all live.
Although one may have "stared directly into the sun", while others "howl at the moon" it may pose the question as to who and why we "are what we are" as individuals.
