Pocahontas – Colors Of The Wind lyrics
You think I'm just an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places; I guess it must be
so
But still I cannot see, if the savage one is
me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't
know...

You think you own whatever land you land on
The earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a
name.

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like
you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never
knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn
moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he
grinned
Can you sing with all the voices of the
mountain
Can you paint with all the colors of the
wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the
forest
Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the
earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once never wonder what they're
worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my
friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle in a hoop that never
ends

How high will a sycamore grow?
If you cut it down then you'll never
know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn
moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain
We need to paint with all the colors of the
wind

You can own the earth and still
All you'll own is earth
until
You can paint with all the colors of the
wind

This song to me says that the earth is more than just grass and dirt. It's a beautiful habitat and home to so many things. And you can have all the money in the world but of you don't appreciate all the wonders of the earth you'll basically have nothing. And those who can't think of the earth as anything but dirt, are the ignorant savages. The earth is free and it's that thing that we all take for granted. We sometimes need to just step outside and just soak up all the beauty this world has to offer and not wonder how much money you can get for a tree, or killing an animal.

Steven Schwartz is a genius lyricist. In these words, he has captured the respect and mysticism Native Americans know as they commune with nature. Giving nature a voice and a spirit elevates mountains and trees and animals to a more revered level than many non Native American cultures can understand. Pocahontas and her fellow natives had so much to teach the Europeans, but in their greed and quest to conquer, the appreciation of the beauty and power of nature was lost to white men. The dichotomy of the European mindset and the Native American philosophy allowed whole tribes to be misunderstood, misrepresented, and mislabeled as savages. Let us finally appreciate cultural differences and learn from each other. Let us also appreciate the beauty and strength of nature and protect her. Let us learn from the mistakes of the past. Awesome, awesome song.

Colors of the wins is in reality the way that all native Americans feel. It is the earth, the sky, the moon, and the sun from which they gather most of their spirits, and the animal habitat of this great earth is also precious to them.

Then along came the white man and destroyed almost all of this with their greed for vast areas of land and for the metals taken fro mother earth. Leaving nothing behind but openings and scabs.

The song is not about nature, it's about caucasian bigotry. The blue corn moon, grinning bob cat etc are all metaphors or examples for all the things in the world the white/caucasians are destroying in the pretext of civilization. The song thus solely aims at dissuading against white/caucasian bigotry. This is clear in the lines "You think the only people who are people Are the people who look and think like you". "You can paint with all the colors of the wind", accordingly persuades the audience that you will be contented with life if you look beyond yourself and respect/appreciate the meanings in other species, and the cultures of other races.

Reading your own idea about meaning of this song is amazing experience for me because of how deep your thoughts are. I totally agree that we take the Earth for granted for a such a long time. This song just awakes me and evokes me asking about myself about how we care about the Earth. Those who can't think of Earth a dead thing but grass or dirt are ignorant ones. Appreciating what Earth gives us and trying to connect with nature will enables us to recognize the wonders of our planet and figure out our true selves. :)

I believe this song goes into depth about racism and that, until you learn the ways of other persons of different races and backgrounds you will never truly understand them and in order to see the world through their eyes you must appreciate and respect their culture and/or religion, learn to walk the footsteps of a stranger suggests this and so you can find out meaningful things about said person and get to know them not for their skin colour but also what their soul and personality says about them, no one should be discriminated because of colour and if you do this then you will never truly appreciate the world for what it is, as this song states come run the hidden trails of the forest, this is an invitation from Pocahontas to John to come and see what my world looks like, come and experience what I do and see who is really the savage by destroying trees and the rich soil, in life we must be open-minded to those around us as not everyone grew up or think like you do. Despite the various races we must come together in a reformation and learn from the past in an attempt to not let history repeat itself, get to know one other, your cultures and personalities and do not the your colour define you. Be different. Be kind. In the Caribbean everyone grew up with each other, Blacks, Whites, Spanish, Indian, Chinese etc. And we all get along well as we made friends from different races and you will be surprised to see that those friends are there for you no matter what, rich or poor we are for each down here. Even our food is the best as we have combined our herbs and spices to make a few delicious and fulfilling meals.

Colors of the wind is often uninterpreted because people do not understand what the main chorus verse means. When it says "until you can paint with all the colors of the wind" it means that until you can pay more attention to something a little more intrinsic than our beings, we have no right to call the land our own. See, pocahontas' tribe and people were very in touch with nature and the world around them. So when people like captain john smith come along and change up the whole story, then you can understand why she is singing about this.

This song was trying to tell us to appreciate and give important in our nature which is the intrinsic beauty in the world. Because of civilization, we thought that we are more knowledgeable and has good things in life than those ethnic group, but the truth are they were the most wise and worth living people in our society as they take care all good natural resources and develop it in natural way. We should open our eyes to the priceless beauty of earth, take care, value and appreciate it.

This song speaks of all that we miss out on when we arrogantly think we know all the answers. The song speaks to the Caucasians when they first arrived, but not in a patronizing way. Instead, the song speaks as an elder to a child and tries to open their minds to what they will miss if they destroy things for reasons that do not serve life.

I think this song is trying to say that we take the earth for granted. People worry to much about what things are worth and can't see the beautiful things right in front of them. Also, we worry to much about appearances and that stuff like that can blind us to things that are really in portant. We destroy animals homes and call the earth ours when in reality it isn't.

I think colours of the wind is trying to show that no matter what status you are in society or how rich you are or how smart. I think it's trying to show that 'everyone is equel, but some people are more equel than others'. This is a quote that you could accosiate with this song. It represents that everyone is equel, but it is your opinion of the world that, in the end, that makes you special. From rebecca holyland.
