Raymond Hannisian – Song Of The Sea lyrics
Gone are the days, when I would go traveling
Over the sea, as a sailor
Seeking the breeze, my dreams went unraveling,
Far from the memories on the shore

My song of the sea, you bring me a melody
Of faces and voices that call me
I find myself yearning for the sea, the sea
Chasing the morning and wandering free

Come and sail on the water and follow a star
Tomorrow is calling and I must be gone
For we must be sailing to know where we are
We are ships on the sea and must keep moving on

I find myself yearning for places I used to be
Sailing the ocean and missing the land

There's no home for the sailor
On the sea or the sand...

The line “There’s no home for the sailor on sea or on sand” could be suggesting that the song is about not belonging and suicide. This is also suggested by the line “faces and voices that call me”. These faces or voices could be those of dead friends or family. This is once again implied by the line “Tommorow is calling and I must be gone”. This could even be about a former sailor writing his suicide letter, assuring his living loved ones that he will be happier and suggesting with the line “We are ships on the sea and must keep movin’ on” that they must move on from his death. Also, “follow a star” could be referring to the sailor finding his way to Heaven.

I don’t think this song is about suicide at all. It has a wistful feel because it is about moving on. We sang it in my high school senior choir. We think fondly about the good times with people we know and love, but we can’t stay stuck there forever. We need to move ahead, have new experiences, set goals. sail off and experience all we can. We need to follow a star. Our whole life long we need to be sailors. We can’t become stagnant or feel at “home.” We need to continually think about making progress and achieving something new.
