Rise Against – Architects lyrics
Are there no fighters left here anymore?
Are we the generation we've been waiting for?
Or are we patiently burning
Waiting to be be saved?

Our heroes our icons have mellowed with age
Following rules that they once disobeyed
They're now being led when they used to lead the way

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before?
Are you out there on the front lines
Or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate?
Or would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

They laid out the blueprints, they poured down a base
Concrete solutions to slow our decay
And when they are gone who the fucks going to take their place?

Will it be the cynics, the critics galore?
The cliche apathetic passed out on the floor
The trusting complicit who collectively ignore

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before?
Are you out there on the front lines or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate?
Or would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

Don't you remember when you were young
And you wanted to set the world on fire?
Somewhere deep down I know you do
Don't you remember when we were young
And we wanted to set the world on fire
Because I still am and I still do

Make no mistake
We are not afraid
To bear the burden of repeating
What they're thinking anyway
Let's raise the stakes
On the bet we made
Let's decide to be the architects
The master of our fate

We still believe in all the things that we stood by before
And after everything we've seen here maybe even more
I know we're not the only ones, and we were not the first
And unapologetically we'll stand behind each word

This song is stating that the previous generations have now finished their turn leading the world and that the next generation now must take up where they left off. We still all have the same believes but now we can't rely on the decisions of the past any longer. This generation now must stand up and work toward tomorrow, and if necessary fight those who try to keep us down. We must be ready to roll the dice when the time comes if we are going to create a better world.

Tom gabel still is fighting the fight. He still dresses like a punk and makes punk music yet you are all saying that he stopped fighting. The world can be overwhelming. Last night in fact I had a breakdown over my best friend dying from friendly fire while we were in iraq. It is hard to keep going sometimes but we have to. If the people that actually care about the world around them don't fight for freedom, the people that don't care will win. It is hard because we follow rules were they don't but we will persevere. Take a lesson from nietzsche and lets start our path towards the overman!

    This song.
Means stand up and fight are we the generation that will stand up and stop this or will we follow the past generations and do what ever we want and leave the mess for the future generations. Stand up or live your life as a person who does what ever to get a head and only is born and then dies and leaves nothing but a mess. Stand up.

And he saw that and said-"I will create my own standard--f*k you--i don't need you so called real punks.
Now, I am 33 and I can totally see what gabel is saying because I too was once a skateboard riding, mohawk wearing punker. But I too, saw that the leadership in punk circles were nothing more than the yuppies I thought they were so opposite of. It was then, I turned to the word or phrase "personal independence" instead of labeling myself a punk. Just Like Tom Gabel.
Now, Mcilrath from Rise Against apparently still feels very much apart of the "real" punk scene and he loves it and feels as tho it needs to be honored and stuck up for. He still believes in it. And these lyrics are his direct response to what Tom Gabel had to say about "punk culture". It is no accident or coincidence that Mcilrath uses Tom Gabels own words from that song--"Do you remember when you were young and you wanted to set the world on fire". That was his way of making sure Tom Gabel got the hint. Personally I am inspired by both viewpoints, because I totally relate with Tom Gabel at this point in my life, but have a shitload of admiration for Rise Against still fighting the fight. They at least seem sincere about it.

Then, he writes this song, basically saying punk is bullshit and he has grown up. He then says in the song---"I was a teenage anarchist, but then the scene got too rigid.
It was a mob mentality, they set their rifle sights on me.
Narrow visions of autonomy, you want me to surrender my identity.
I was a teenage anarchist, the revolution was a lie. Which is to say what he said above---Punk leaders and the fans were trying to make him conform to them, to their standard.

It reminds me of my football career in highschool. We started out as a garbage football team, going 0-10 my sophomore year. Those seniors gave us a reason to keep fighting and never quit. They were the blueprints and my class was the generation they've been waiting for. Junior year we made the playoffs with a 6-5 record, then senior year going 8-3 by winning out the first 8 games. This song has a bigger meaning than what I think it has but it will always mean football to me.
