Rise Against – Paper Wings lyrics
One last thing I beg you please, just before you go
I've watched you fly on paper wings half way round the world
Until they burned up in the atmosphere and sent you spiraling down
Landing somewhere far from here with no one else around
To catch you falling down
And I'm looking at you now

And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
It's not waiting for you and neither am I

Swing for the fences son, he must have told you once
That was a conversation you took nothing from salvation
Raise your glass now and celebrate exactly what you've done
Just put off another day of knowing where you're from
You can catch up with yourself
If you run

And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
Its not waiting for you and neither am I

Is this the life that you lead?
Or the life that's led for you?
Will you take the road that's been laid out before you
Will we cross paths somewhere else tonight?
Somewhere else tonight...

And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
It's not waiting for you and neither am I

And I can't tell if you're laughing
Between each smile there's a tear in your eye
There's a train leaving town in an hour
Its not waiting for you and neither am I

The inconstancy of friends and friendship. We are motivated by different things - and friends are no less different. But when these actions disagree with your own, you try to hang on as a friend, even knowing what they are doing is foolish - paper wings.

In the end, we see that person change, and we (in our role as friend) cannot bear seeing this torment to keep happening - train leaving, it's not waiting for you; neither am I.

The singer knows that this girl or friend was close to the egde, but they were hanging on so well for a while (i've watched you fly on paper wings halfway around the world). The paper wings were so weak, but the person made it so far despite that. But finally the friend/girl just let go, and the singer became sick of constantly being the one holding on. He decided to let go, unless the other person fixed it (and I can't tell if you're laughing; between each smile there's a tear in your eye. There's a train leaving town in an hour. It's not waiting for you and neither am i).
