Rise Against – The Dirt Whispered lyrics
She got down on hands and knees, one ear against the ground,
Holding her breath to hear something, but the dirt made not a sound tonight

Echoes of songs still lurk on distant foreign shores, where we
Danced just to please the gods that only ask for more, and so it goes

But still we give ourselves to this
We can't spend our lives waiting to live

On cold nights
In a prayer for dawn
But daylight
Isn't what she wants

The concrete
Calls my name again
I'm falling
Through the cracks I slip

The postcard says wish you were here
But I'd rather I was there, holding
On to the simple things before they disappear, that's what I meant

But that was then, and this is now
I'll make it up to you somehow

On cold nights
In a prayer for dawn
But daylight
Isn't what she wants

The concrete
Calls my name again
I'm falling
Though the cracks I slip

A destination
A fading smile

Another station
Another mile
Another day gone

I swore that I will
Be there before dawn
So be there I will

She got down on hands and knees, one ear against the ground,
Holding her breath to hear something, anything at all

The Dirt Whispered, "Child, I'm coming home."

On cold nights
In a prayer for dawn
But the daylight
Isn't what she wants

The concrete
Calls my name again
I'm falling
Though the cracks I slip
I slip
Through the cracks I slip
Through the cracks I slip
Through the cracks I slip
Through the cracks I slip

To me, this is a song about a daughter waiting for her father or mother to come home. When it talks about her putting her ear to the ground she is listening for the sound of a train. When the dirt whispers child I'm coming home, that's the sound of the train. "Another station another mile also talks about a train."
The parent sent her a postcard from another country saying I wish you were here, but the parent just really wants to be home "holding on to simple things." The reason the child wishes for daylight is because the parent made a promise that they would be home before dawn. "a prayer for dawn but daylight isn't what she wants." "I swore that I will be there before dawn"

I think it's about the sacrifices we make daily in order to obtain our dreams and it takes us away from the people and places we love most, but in the end it's the realiztion of dreams and obtaining them that makes it's so strong, and you can then share those successes with the people we hold closest to our hearts. Those who we love most also will always be there to support us, whether or not we are near or far.

I think this song is talking about a daughter who is waiting for her dad to come home from war and he told her he'd be home soon, but he is unable to come home and keeps being restationed in different places. And he talks about making it up to her because she thought he'd be home sooner. "through the cracks i slip" means that he is barely able to stand being away from her for so long and he knows how hard it is for her since he was a single parent to her.

I think its about 2 people, whether friends or family being seperated. One is anxiously waiting for the other to return, from war or whatever. Truth is, just like every other rise against song, you can relate it to whatever you want. I personally am having trouble seeing my girlfriend due to travel and such. This song just makes me feel better about it because in the end ill be able to see her everyday. Another reason why they are my all time favourite band xd.

Well I think it's a story of a girl wiating for a dad's return most likely form the war probably in Iraq or mabye Pakistan (the dirt represent the Deserts) mainly because alot of their songs are about those subjects and the only thing she wants is to be with her dad before losing him even if it means dying (The postcard says wish you were here but I'd rather I was there, Holding) and at the end she finnaly gets what she wants when the dirt whispered to her "child I'm comig home"

I think the song is the story of someone who has been away for along time for whatever reason and the girl may not even be realated to him or just one person I think she represents all the loved ones family and friends that hes been away from as a military member that's exactly how I feel always being away and missing out on everything from the birthday party of a friend to your nephew being born and in a sense I feel as though its my fault for missing that and when I go home for the first time in two years I feel the need to make it up to everyone as for the station and miles whenever I do go to visit familly I drive and count the miles and radio stations only carry so far so everytime the person has to change stations he knows that hes that much closer to home.

I think it's about them trying to figure out what they're supposed to do, the dirt sybolizing the earth, universe. And when it said "child, i'm coming home" to her it meant it was coming to like tell her what to do. And he's slipping through the cracks in the concrete because he doesn't know what he's supposed to do. I like the song, and the lyrics are interesting as well.
