Roberta Flack – Angelitos Negros lyrics
Pintor nacido en mi tierra
Con el pincel extranjero
Pintor que sigues el rumbo
De tantos pintores viejos

Aunque la virgen sea blanca
Píntale angelitos negros
Que también se van al cielo
Todos los negritos buenos

Pintor si pintas con amor
Por qué desprecias su color?
Si sabes que en el cielo
También los quiere Dios

Pintor de santos alcoba
Si tienes alma en el cuerpo
Por qué al pintar en tus cuadros
Te olvidaste de los negros

Siempre que pintas iglesias
Pintas angelitos bellos
Pero nunca te acordaste
De pintar un ángel negro

As an asian american immigrant, to me, this song reflects racism and stereotyping in human relationship, and how it affects non-whites. In this song, the writer portrays a little colored boy asking the painter "why you only paint white angels? Why not black or colored angels also , because color people also go to heaven? "
The meaning of this song is indeed, very touching especially to non-white folks in america, the land of the brave and the home of the free!

A very special and important song... Roberta Flack could sing indeed. Angelitos Negros is a powerful song from the Songstress herself and a strong black woman. The first take is a beautiful and mind blowing album. I am listening to it on a Vinly. Nice and inspiring. Music, music, music...

I loved the sound of the song. I knew it talked about black angels but when I was told the true meaning of the words by a puerto rican close friend of mine the song made me very sad and as a black female I wanted to weep but I know when satan was cast down I was not with him I chose to come here and spread love for that is the nature of my spirit. I am as my father for he is spirit and love and not of this world. I pass through and weep as I go. I too am a writer and singer.

I was sixteen when I first heard the song. I thought the words were absolutely beautiful as well as telling. It also made me think about how many in the world perceive people of color. I thought it was a wake up call to white Americans especially those with beliefs that blacks are less important than they themselves. Now At 67, I see much of the same. The same in terms of racial inequality and mindsets with todays issues in the world. So over a century has passed since I came to that conclusion and as I reflect from a young teenager to now a middle aged adult I am disappointed that we have yet to fulfil the the very core of this nations promise, "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal" white, black, yellow, red etc. Seeing the youth of day protesting and acknowledging the discrepancies gives hope to this fallen nation.
