40 years ago today the "love of my life" prefessed her love to me. She was army, I was navy. She was black, I was white. I did not express my love to her at the time and we eventually parted. But I never forgot her or anything about her. We attended a roberta flack concert in washington dc and ever since then, whenever I heard the first note of "the first time ever i saw your face" my life would stop as I would remember the love we shared on april 13, 1972. Last october, fate or devine intervention reconnected us. Now, exactly 40 years later, we are planning our future together. I have never loved anyone like I love her. Nor she, me. This song still brings tears to my eyes but now they are tears of joy instead of love lost. Thank you roberta flack, thank debbie!

It is slow because love does not arrive like a blaze of guns, ir arrives with awakening of the heart. In the deep recesses of the heart lie the yearnings of a lifetime; the spiritual union with another. We do not always recognize it when ithat love is in front of us; first a glance that sees the manifestation of the outer world--the sun, stars and moon. Then a kiss that shakes us to our core and we see the trembling heart that is our own awakening. The union that seals for all time the connection made. Is so unique and precious that it cannot be denied, forgotten or, in some circles, put asunder. I know because I had the experience and it is like an unfolding; and we are married for 21years.

When I had my daughter by a c-section I was unconcious for a few hours after the doctors took her from me. When I awoke and asked the nurses for my baby and they brought her to my bed. Ms. Roberta flack's song came mind when I first laid eyes on my daughter. This song aptly expressed everything I felf for my child. Today she is a beautiful 17 year old. And she know's that this is her song as dedicated to her by me. This song is one of the most if not the most beautiful songs ever. Absolutely beautiful.

I love to listen to certain love songs while appropriating the meaning between Jesus and me. (You have to really know Him to understand what I'm trying to say.) Even the reference in this song to the consummated physical expression of human love in the 3rd stansa can, in truth, be seen as a biblical reference theologically to the highest possible expression of experiencing the relational love between human believer and him! The greek words literally refer to this meaniing being "intercourse!" Anyway, sensuality is not implied at all in what I'm trying to express here. I hope readers understand. And if not, read the Gospel of John asking him to reveal this love to you! Blessings!

I believe this song is about true love finding another true love, and the journey from interest, to attraction to true and lasting love - at least for the period of time it lasted or lasts. I've actually seen couples that have been together that really have "it". I believe it's possible and rare, I feel this song is about that rare occasion when you actually find that kind of connection. I hope to find it myself.

I disagree that love doesn't arrive in a blinding flash - because that's exactly what happened to me. I heard his voice, saw his face and wham! It took many years for him to admit he felt the same, but here we are 40 years married with two glorious children and grandchildren who bear witness to the fact that love at first sight is real and lasts a lifetime.
